I think if I were Muslim and knew the approximate date it was going to be (like you said, for sure its either M, T, or W) I would request those days off just so I knew I could celebrate AND I would take my kid out of school once I knew for sure when it would be.

I have seen all kinds of news reports for people taking off for the Rosh Hashanah, even on Capitol Hill but nothing about Eid (even though there is a Muslim conngressman from MN). All the news channels were scrolling about Rosh Hashanah, not a peep about Eid.

Maybe if all the religions got some recognition then some people would not be put off when they hear about different celebrations.

Why sweep Muslim celebrations under the rug?

Another note: People knew WELL in advance when Rosh Hashanah is and probably requested the day off months in advance. Eid was decided the last minute and we all know what the confusion was over when exactly it was. Maybe people didn't even ask to have those days off? I personally know someone who got the day off for Eid and I'm sure there are plenty. And I also know people who did not get off for Rosh Hasnanah. I've never had it off in my entire life but I've gotten all the Christian holidays off.....

*shrug* Oh well!

It's so nice to be self-employed... :luv: I can take off b/c it's Tuesday or b/c I'm taking my husband to the airport, or b/c I have cramps! Granted, I don't get paid, but heck.... it's nice being self employed. :D

I think all women should get one day a month off for cramps no questions asked!

I guess it depends on where you live. I grew up in the town that I live in now and I remember getting Rosh Hashanna and Yom Kippur off from school. Eid is definitely a tricky one since no one REALLY knows for sure when it will be but I had an idea that it would be October 1st since that is what the north american council had stated so I requested it off in advance and was told that I can't take the whole day because it is business day 1 here, howevaa we have about 3 other analysts here who had the whole day off. Granted they had a different manager though so I'm hoping that's the case instead of it being that they are jewish and i am muslim. I'm not going to make a stink about it since we just had massive layoffs and I'd rather lay low but seriously I never even got an email from the president stating happy Ramadan, but he always sends it out before Christmas and did so this year for Rosh Hashana.

I"m rambling now but I wonder if it just doesn't cross their mind. Maybe if more people speak up something will be done. I'm one of a few muslim moms in our school system and if I had the energy I could probably make a point about it and start passing out Ramadan and Hajj info sheets or something to the teachers but I'm too lazy.

Well I posted a happy Rosh Hashanah thread here and hardly anyone responded! But hey, I said happy Eid to you all. ;)

Any organization that has the $$$ can create special days at 6 flag theme parks. Looks like 6 flags in St. Louis hosted a christian music festival this summer. I bet if I did more than a cursory 5 second google search, I'd find more.

OMGosh, those evil physics students, clogging up the park with their accelerometers and altimeters. They're shoving physics down our throats! (btw, physics day was the best day of my high school career. Lots and lots of fun hanging around with lots and lots of geeks).

06/15/09 - Citizenship interview

I'm not being disrespectful in any way shape or form, but I've yet to see a day for Christians at any theme parks. Don't get me wrong, myself being married to a muslim man, I totally and completely repect his religion, but he honestly was shocked when I called him up to talk to him about this a few moments ago. Since he's been here he's realized that we as Americans cannot do many things that our great-grandparents did because we will offend someone. Honestly, this does offend me. I googled this Muslim day at Six Flags and the workers cannot even where shorts because they might offend someone! Come on! We are in American, the land of the free!!!!! I'm offended because since other religions are offended, we cannot as Christians celebrate Christmas without someone being offended. Put a Christmas tree or a cross up and OMG!

Ahhhhh Crazy - well, surprise, surprise, surprise...there are days for Christians at themeparks - I have learned following my extensive experience at DisneyWorld - my favorite. :luv:

At WDW's Epcot Center, aside from all of Walt Disney World being decked out in spectacular lights and decorations - amazing!!!, they also do what is called "The Candlelight Processional". The CP involves famous stars reading from the Bible the story of Christ's birth and all sorts of traditional sacred hymns. This is a hugely attended event with people booking their tickets as much as 6 months in advance~! Also, Disney sponsors what they call "The Night of Joy", which traditionally has two Spirit-filled nights with 20 different Christian music acts. It supposedly is the cat's pajamas when it comes to rockin' it for Jesus.

You would be surprised how many different days the themeparks have - you just don't know about them. Disney has had for a long time GayDay (which is now a whole week) and a few others to boot. Did you know that the Busch Family of Parks has a program called, "Here's to the Heroes"? This program gives entry to a family of a member of the US Armed Services. They also will recognize the family and the US allies in the Iraq war during the Shamu show. All followed with a "God Bless America" afterwards.

I think it's cool that Six Flags is doing this - be the bigger person/organization and reach out to a new community. I see Muslims at WDW and SeaWorld all the time...they support commerce as much as anyone else, why not give them a good turn as well.

They have them at 6 flags over mid America......not far from here. Once per year roughly. They call it Christian Family Day. Special rates, Christian music performances, etc.

We have Christian Family Day at our Baseball Stadium once a year too.

And one from Indiana!

The representative from the great state of Minnesota celebrated Eid at our home masjid, where once again I got all fan girl and couldn't strike up the nerve to say anything beyond giving him salaams

 why is it so hard for some americans to understand the difference between certain forms of government based recognition of religion being disallowed, and private non-government based recognition of religion being perfectly fine? putting up christmas decorations in a government building is not analogous to my father putting up christmas decorations in his business that he's owned for 30 years. a muslim family day at privately owned six flags with special requests made of six flags employees is not analogous to a muslim family day at a national park where federal employees are requested to adhere to a certain wardrobe.

yr husband was probably shocked because yr an american citizen, but yet have no understanding whatsoever of this fundamental feature of our country.

where do you live that you cant put out a xmas tree? where i live, and i do not live in the bible belt or anything like that, xmas is shoved down everyones throats um in about a few weeks after halloween.

i honestly think six flags uses what would normally be a not so busy day and tries to make it a profitable one by bringing together like people to a place they might not normally go. they do the same for the days in between passover, they know lots of families take off or its spring break so they do specials. i dont see it as preferential treatment to jews, i think six flags sees an opportunity to make $$ thru family day.

Personally I think it's great! When I saw this post I felt relieved in a way. Yesterday was Eid but it was also a Jewish holiday. Each one of my jewish coworkers got to take the day off but me? I got the morning off but had to work the afternoon.

During Christmas people are let go early Christmas eve and have the day off for Christmas. During Easter most get Good Friday off. Many many restaurants are decorated with nice lights, etc. for Christmas and some even have Channaka (sp) decorations. Schools now have "holiday" parties where the kids sing not only songs for Christmas but also Channakuh and even Kwanza and lemme tell you there's not one kid in our school that actually celebrates Kwanza but there are approximately 10 in the elementary school that my kids went to that do celebrate Ramadan and Hajj. Not one word is mentioned about those holidays in this so called "holiday" party.

Good for Six Flags for actually recognizing that we exist!

even tho I, as a jew, get a few holidays granted off I understand your frustration. i was getting annoyed yesterday wondering where all of the seperation of church and state is. either dont seperate it and give everyone their religious holidays off, or seperate it and have everyone work xmas too and have people use their own vacations for holidays. i got annoyed that muslims dont get eid etc off. im annoyed that my son's school is closed for one day of rosh hashanah but not the two that the holiday actually is. also my son's school does the whole xmas chanukah kwanza thing and there are a few muslims and what do they get? nothing. i complained last year to his teacher that if you are going to save education on religious holidays to december, then cover the muslim, buddhist, i dont know, bahai? ones that you missed throughout the year while you are at it....
