The documents that are to be submitted for DS-230 - birth certificates, marriage certificates etc. do these need to be originals? I'm confused- we were able to send copies of these items to start the process but if I am reading correctly I need to send originals or certified copies.... not sure what a certified copy is- James' shortcuts says can't be done by a notary.

What did you all send in ?? if you sent originals what did you take with you to the interview ??? Thought I was really over the hump with the paperwork but now I'm not thinking I am.

Hi,

You are correct, the DS-230 part two is to be sent in but not signed, the beneficiary will sign that when they are at the interview.

when you get the marriage certificate and the birth certificate they are actaully certified copies as the government keeps the original documents in a vault somewhere :P

True, but you know something, when I was going through all our paper before we moved, I came across our 'original' marriage certificate. I don't even remember her (the marriage officiant) giving us an original - but there you go.

oh I have that too... we sent that to the lawyer and he sent it to the NVC but that isn't what they wanted...

they wanted the official certificate you get from the government....

or maybe we are talking about different things..

Thanks for the replies. The good part about all of this is that I'm flying into Calgary next Thursday to see my husband.... I'll get the paperwork in order then. I was hoping to have things sent off beforehand but as usual another bump in the road.... you think we'd be used to it by now. I'll just be glad to be seeing my husband again ...... this should be the last trip before he finally gets to come home! YAY!
