Here's what happened:

I applied for my SSN last sept. 7,08 and got it on the 11th of Sept. under my single name. My I-94 will expires on 15th of September 2008.

Got Married last 10th of September and then after receiving our marriage contract/certificate in mail. I went to the SSA again for correction in my name to my married name: Brought with me my I-94, MC, Passport and the old SSN ID/#.

I applied back last 22nd again for the correction on my lastname: After a week i received mail from the SS office asking me to come to their office before Oct. 15, 08 and bring my original marriage certificate, as well as the original documents such as passport, I-94 and any other documentation from the Department of Homeland SEcurity. BEFORE THEY CAN APPROVE THE REQUEST FOR A NEW CARD, they need more information about the name change.

Did i screw things up here?

When they say documents from the Department of Homeland Security what documents are they referring? [We haven't filed for AOS yet due to financial]

I really need your help and opinion with this. Thank you in advance. The quicker the better.. Thanks

You need to apply for SSN while there is at least 10 days validity on the I-94, sounds like it was down to 8 days validity.

You may run into a problem when returning to SSA with an expired I-94, they may tell you that you will have to wait until you have another valid document from DHS that provides work authorization, (EAD or Green-card).

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

How about updating citizenship information in a later date? Will there be any problem? I am a citizen now, but my record still immigrant.

Not a major problem, but it is a good Idea to remember to do it, Citizens get more benefits from SSA than LPR's so you need to update your status with SSA to get those benefits.

oh I didnt know that there was a distinction between permanent residents and US Citizens in social security. What are the major differences?

My wife naturalized recently and had her SS name changed (I told her to keep her maiden name until she's a citizen, less chance of mix-up with the USCIS + the naturalization process allows you to change your name at the actual ceremony anyway with no court fees) but I'm not sure if she updated her immigrant status.

Other than eligibility for SSI benefits a U.S. citizen isn't eligible for anything a permanent resident isn't eligible to receive from SSA.

I also had the same experience. I applied for my SSN before I got married. My husband and I requested name change after we got married and the SSA informed us that aside from our marriage certificate, they need supporting documents from the USCIS. As soon as we got the AOS green card interview appointment from the USCIS, we went back to the SSA and together with the marriage certificate, the old SSN card, passport, they eventually approved my request name change. I guess you didn't screw things up.

Hokey Smoke!

Rocky: "Baby, are they still mad at us on VJ?"

Bullwinkle: "No, they are just confused."

OKAY, SO, THAT MEANS IF I WON'T BE ABLE TO GET APPROVE NOW, WE WILL JUST GO BACK TO SSA TOGETHER WITH MY AOS RECEIPT OR SOMETHING FROM DHS, AND SHOWED IT TO THEM,

THANKS.. MORE POWER!!!

You go back once you receive your EAD card or greencard... anything short of that will be a disappointing visit.

YMMV
