I'm about to submit DS-230. I'm confused the checklist in James's shortcut with 2 following items:

Original/Certified Passport Office Police Certificate for Beneficiary and a copy

Original/Certified Police Clearance Certificate and a copy

I don't know what is the difference between Passport Office Police Certificate & Police Clearance Certificate. I have impression that I need to obtain 2 documents from Canada police.

I only got ONE piece of certified "Canadian Police Certificate" in which it certifies that my name is clear from criminal records.

Please clarify. Thanks

Here in Brazil, I had to collect 2 different Police records: one from the Province where I live, and the second one, from Brazil - where I got from the federal police (the same where I had my passport issued)

According to the instructions provided by the NVC, Canadians may obtain their police certificates from either the RCMP or their local police department. Personally I would be safe and get the RCMP certificate (not the fingerprint one, just the criminal record check one, which should be free). While they say a local department one is acceptable and many Canadians have submitted them successfully, I received an RFE on mine for an unspecified reason, so its best to play it safe.

yeah just the RCMP one. some of the local ones search the CPIC but it doesn't say it on the paper they give you, so its no good to NVC

Hi There,

I just submitted one and it was the police certificate provided by the RCMP. At the time, I wasn't sure if they wanted the one with my fingerprint or just the certificate itself. Anyways, I decided to get the fingerprinted one, just to be sure. My case was completed on Aug. 28 and my interview is scheduled for Oct 28. So yes, I believe you only need one from the RCMP.

Goodluck!!

Again, thank you so much for your quick responses. I think I already got the RCMP one.

If you happen to live in Montreal like I do you will have to get it from a third party security company such as Garda. Both the local Police and RCMP told me they no longer do it in Montreal.
