Question on Translating Marriage Certificate & Others

Hi Everybody!

I've been a lurker here on VJ for a few months and this is my first post.

I'm a US Citizen and I am in the process of gathering everything to send in an I-130 for my husband, a Jordanian citizen living in Italy. I have a few questions I wanted to knock out in one-post and hopefully you guys can help me!

My question is this, I have a copy of our marriage certificate from the city in Italy where we were married. The marriage certificate is two pages long. The first page is in Italian - with large numbers next to every information field. The second page of this document is a list of all the numbers (1 through 12) with the translation in Nine language. The document is "Extract from marriage registration no." I have this document apostilled.

My question is - is this document valid to submit as a marriage certificate? Should I not risk it? When I requested other copies of our marriage certificate from the Commune, they gave me an Italian-only form with the exact same information as this "extract" form (which I also have aspostilled).

Do I need to have the huge, decorative certificate we received from the City at our ceremony certified translated? I am very confused by all of this.

I think I will submit the multi-lingual form the City gave us (and re-submit in case of any problems), but I wanted to hear what everyone else would say (I can link to a scan of the multi-lingual form if it helps).

My other questions are: Should I submit third-party affidavits of bona fides as photocopies or as originals?

Also, does differing paper size (A4 vs. US sized paper) matter at all?

Hi and Welcome to VJ!

It sounds like the document you have that has the english translations on it would be fine. As long as it has your name and his name and info and the court or official location, date, etc. where you married and an official seal of some sort it should be fine. Our marriage certificate was in arabic from the Sharia Court in Amman so we had to have ours translated. If the pertinent vital info on your document is not in english you will need to get it translated.

I did not submit any bona fides with my I-130. I don't know if most do or don't. But my petition was received and processed just fine and we are about to complete the process with an interview scheduled on Oct 15. What I did was send a photo of us at our wedding party - just 1 and wrote a paragraph about how we met and fell in love and eventually married. I think thats all you need to do. With a fiance visa more burden of proof may be needed but in your case you are already married.

The paper size doesn't matter when you are submitting. These agencies deal with worldwide documentation so they have seen it all. The paper doesn't have to be US 8.5 x 11 size. Most countries use the larger A4 paper and that will work fine.

Good luck to you....follow all of the instructions carefully and you will be fine. Be prepared to wait though, it is a very long process.

This sounds like an international form. This was the case for my birth certificate and I still got it translated. I read of someone getting an RFE so I did not want to take any chances. The certified translation did not cost much anyways.
