My wife owns an apartment in Russia, and its not a closet, its a 3 bedroom.

But I don't care about what its worth, its nice to have. And its hers. I had nothing to do with it. She can do whatever she wishes with it.

My mum recently invested in a building house right near Moscow, its 20min on a bus from metro yugo-zapadnaya..

she paid 6 months ago around 130 000 the promise was to move in in december of 2008,but it looks like she has to wait now till september 2009..annoying huh?in contract they do not mention any date...and guess what all plans like that do so..Otherwise that flat built would be like 200 000at least and she would not be able to afford it.

Anyway she says since 6 months prices went up more..Now they are around 180k before they are even built..and thats not a Moscow!!!!

So i guess in a future we will be able to sell her flat there and buy some house here in Northern CA...

I think its wrong time to invest too,but looks like i am wrong since prices are still going up....

Isn't California ridiculously overpriced as well?

Right now (once the market bottoms out) would be the right time to invest in stocks...housing may take a while to get sorted out, and to get rid of the dead weight of the idiots who thought house prices COULD go up 30% a year for 10 years.

Speaking of housing prices in Russia, anyone have a link to real estate site over there.

The few I have seen seem to be very upscale type properties.

I had one or two sites in Ukraine in english but I have never seen a good one in Russia.

Try www.themoscowtimes.com and look in the classifieds or click on any of the realty ads. But any site that is in English will be for the highest priced properties. Using ads to find an inexpensive property in Russia is seldom useful. Most Russians get an agent who does all the searching then brings the info back to the client.

The high end companies won't even give normal (i.e. not super rich) people the time of day. When we were trying to sell our 60sq meter 2 room Moscow apt in 2005 we called an agent from Evan's Realty. She spoke English, was really nice and said she would list our property and help us find a new apt. An hour later she called back and said her boss forbid her to take us as clients because our $100,000 apt wasn't worth enough! We ended up getting a Russian agent in our neighborhood who didn't advertise but was recommended by a neighbor. He did a good job of selling our flat and sent us to an agent in Dmitrov who found our new 50sq meter $30,000 apt. (which is now worth 3x that after only 3 years).

If you want to find something cheaper, do it in Russian/have someone else do it in Russian for you. I have never seen anything reasonably priced in the St. Petersburg Times, so I shudder to think what the prices are like in the Moscow Times.

The assumption is, for some reason, that if you're an American in Russia that you have money to burn and want to live in a completely remonted, "euro-style" apartment. I had agents show me 2000 euro a month apartments when I was 20 years old and paying 250 euros a month for where I was living at the time.

In Moscow it's impossible to find anything affordable! Forget buying unless you have $6000 per square meter. Outside of Moscow apartments are running around $3000 per square meter. It's a result of not only the rich expats (who get a hefty housing allowance as part of their perks package) but all those super rich "Novie Ruskie" with pockets full of petro-cash and a spectacular addiction to lux shopping.

It's seems a little crazy that with thousands of everyday run-of-the-mill flats for sale, there are no

places to list them collectively.

This would seem like a business waiting to happen if it's the case.

At any rate, I am not looking to buy, I just like to look.

Don't hold me to it but... I would never want to live in St. Pet due to the weather.

I like Russia (Ukraine even more so) and could imagine "one day" relocating there but it would have to be a area with reasonable climate, not rain every other day and a month and a half of summer.

It's possible a search engine might turn up a site with flats for sale.

I have a friend who's son is thinking about accepting a job teaching English in Russia. So far all it know is the job is suppose to be in an oil city, but don't know the name yet. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience about costs in these oil communities regarding rent, food, etc.?

As soon as I find out the name, I'll ask a better question.

Expensive as hell would be the answer but the good news is most of the time English teaching gigs include room and board or at least some kind of off-set payment for housing and food.

The flip side of that is in an oil city he'll make good tips or be able to freelance for some big $$$.
