The Republicans' intransigence kills the bailout bill—and possibly McCain's electoral chances.

Sure, the bill could have passed if more Democrats had voted for it. But Speaker Nancy Pelosi and co. were able to bring along 60 percent of their caucus.

When I was in high school, a score of 60% was called a failure, but according to the Democrats its enough to blame the Republicans.

Anybody else find it ironic that Democrats are angry at House Republicans for not obeying President Bush more closely?

Wow. The only 'NAY' votes were republicans. Hook me up with some of that smoke Steve.

Surely there had to be Democrats that voted against this too. They are the Majority and if they lock stepped then it would have passed.

The Democrat "No" vote, if I read correctly, was about 40%. So, to go back to the original article quoted, yes, it's a minority of the Democrats in the House. But it's a damned big minority.

The one person I really hope comes out of this looking an idiot isn't either of the presidential candidates. It's Nancy Pelosi, who, it has now been proven, has no control over her own party. She has been the figurehead of the largest roadblock in American politics for the last 2 years and it's about time her sheer incompetence emblazoned across every news media in the country.

She is leader of a Congress with an approval rating in the single digits, percentage-wise. Even George W Bush has never sunk that low. She deserves the order of the boot, and quick, so that the next Congress might actually get something done, instead of spending 2 weeks grilling Roger Clemens about steroid abuse.

The very nature of a bipartisan deal is that majorities of both parties support it. They'll have to hammer out something that will accomplish that. It'll probably be better than what Congress voted on today.

I agree. For all we know we'll end up calling this a Bipartisan effort to stopping a bad bill, with most of the Republicans and almost half of the Democrats agreeing that it was not the right thing. The fingerpointing on both sides has got to stop. Its just pathetic.

I am curious though. If it was Republican intransgience that killed this bill as the title implies. And most of the electorate was against the bill. How does it hurt McCains electoral chances?

It hurts McCain, because unlike those Republicans that voted against the bill, he supported it.

So did Obama.

The finger pointing has to continue, but to the real cause of the problem, which is, Congress itself as a major role. The Democrat's fault, Republicans fault thing is just the sort of distraction they want. The ones that are so aggressively pushing this are just playing the ####### for tat game and trying to justify them getting more political contributions. It's a never ending cycle, and the ultimate result is nothing good for the people, just for the rich.

In the current climate, where the majority of the American public don't support the bill in its current form, I would be surprised if anything gets through Congress prior to the election. The representatives who voted against now, by listening to their electorate, will not be likely to vote for a revision of the current bill until they know they're either safe, or out of a job.

I still find it uncomfortable that people here of both sides want to see a deal done, despite the view of the majority of the American public. The whole premise of this bailout lacks any redeeming feature to the majority of the electorate. All they see is big business being given a lifeline and the taxpayer picking up the tab. This idea that the Government might end up making money is, for most people, just window dressing, the promise of a happy ending sometime in the distant future.

I'd be happier if I could say that Congress would continue to vote down proposals such as this, based on Representatives actually representing their constituents' wishes, but I can almost guarantee that after November 5th, or at the latest, January 20th, a bill like this would sail through Congress with barely a discussion. In the meantime, I'm just happy that GWB, each of the presidential candidates, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and all the other reprobates scheming to put this bill together are covered in sh!t and the fan is still working.

"One of the messages I have to Congress is: Get this done," Obama said. "Democrats, Republicans, step up to the plate, get it done."

he's not even president and he's a lame duck.

If that's the measure, then there are two lame ducks running. ;)

don't you just hate it when your boy is ignored? :P

Well, McCain and Palin's own party slammed the door in their face, given that vote.

Although, it's not because of some logical repudiation like some of us were touting, it's because of being in bed with private interests.

In this case, I'm not so sure I do. The deal stank and I am glad it did not pass.
