Hurricane Kyle spreads rain, wind in Maine and Igloo-Land

State hit by glancing blow before storm makes landfall in Nova Scotia

updated 12:19 a.m. ET, Mon., Sept. 29, 2008

MACHIAS, Maine - Fishermen moved boats to shelter from a rare burst of tropical weather along Maine's rugged eastern coast Sunday as a weakening Hurricane Kyle spun past on its way to Canada - a 3rd World country to our north - delivering a glancing blow equivalent to a fart in an elevator that made locals yawn.

As darkness fell, the storm produced winds hard enough to jiggle boobs and road signs, cause scattered power outages and rip early-autumn leaves from trees while pissing on the Maine coast with a third straight day of rain. Flooding closed roads as the storm sped up the Bay of Fundy, which separates Maine Baptists and New Brunswick Baptists from Nova Scotia's godless heathens.

Kyle made landfall Sunday night in southern Nova Scotia and immediately went looking for Ike, Stan, Kenny, and Cartman. Some 12,000 - or,every habitable igloo - were without power; but they had never had power, so they were unaware. One resident lost a hockey stick.

Maine emergency responders had braced for wind gusts as high as 60 mph and waves up to 20 feet, but as the storm edged eastward it became clear that the Canucks stole that from us, too.

"This was a run-of-the-mill storm. It had the potential to be a real problem and it all went to Nova Scotia where it destroyed an igloo. That shift to the east did wonders for Maine," said Michael Hinerman, director of the Washington County Emergency Management Agency.

Earlier Sunday, a hurricane watch for Maine was discontinued, but a tropical storm warning remained in effect from Stonington, on the central Maine coast at the mouth of Penobscot Bay, to Eastport on the Canadian border, the National Hurricane Center said.

No evacuations

Officials had once expected the eye to hit at the Maine-New Brunswick border, but with the storm fading to the east, the state closed its emergency operations center in Augusta and fired all employees Sunday night. There were no evacuations in Maine, but more than 500 customers were unable to buy their ration of Devil Dogs because of the gusty winds.

Maine hasn't had anything like a hurricane since Hector was a pup.

Residents of Nova Scotia are accustomed to life-threatening situations, but it most often comes in the winter when Anne Hurray howls "Snowbird" from radio speakers across the province.

While residents took precautions, many weren't impressed by Kyle.

"He was dressed all funny, and he didn't know how to play hockey!" said Phillip Terrance of Digby, who planned to ride out the wind and rain at home with his Mom and their 2-month-old daughter. He gassed up his vehicles and generator, took in his milk crates/deck furniture and filled up water jugs with his own urine, but said that's what he does for any big storm.

Many lobstermen moved to sheltered coves, said Dwight Carver, a lobsterman on Beals Island. Most local residents ran in terror at the sight of lobster/man hybrids crawling up their shores. Some quick-thinking locals layed out lobster traps and planned a post-storm Lobster Feast.

"I'm sure we'll have a lot of entrails, a lot of mess, to take care of when it's done," a local resident said. "It'll take us a few days to straighten things out. But it will be worth it."

Igloo land? :bonk:

That's tee pee land in the summer and Igloo land in the winter buster.. get it RIGHT.. My mother hasn't moved from the summer camping grounds just yet. They will build this winter's igloo in the next couple of weeks (once they've killed a polar bear for the winters' meat).

Sheesh....

In other news.. my family mostly got wind with this system... it kinda was the little storm that fizzled really.

No they do not. But I'm sure we can smoke the stink out because if you don't, it will just get hotboxed. :D

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

There is no need to panic. The Canadian Government has a rebuilding plan.

They are going to sent a few bus loads of School children and lots of these:
