I think most temp agencies will give you a test when you first apply. I did the tests last fall and scored pretty good on everything. You have to know all the major MS Office products like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Access. If you don't know them well, I think most community colleges have classes for them now, and even some have classes for the big software providers packages like SAP, Oracle and whoever else is left. (I used to work for JDE, who got bought out by PeopleSoft, and last I heard Oracle was looking to buy them out).

Good luck!

The temp agency I worked for allowed you to come in and train on MS Office if you didn't do well on the tests.

What is it you are trying to break into?

An office type of enviroment, when I lived in England I worked for 5 years for the railway, I was a clerical officer. I would like to work in an office that was not on public show, I know that sounds funny but when I worked for the railway I worked in the Ticket Offices, not just one but all over Surrey and Hampshire, I dealt with the public on a daily basis and the majority were nice. I would just like to do something a little bit different.

Hey, me too! I also worked for the railway as a booking clerk at London Liverpool Street station for four years. I know exactly what you mean though when you talk about wanting to get away from being in the public eye all the time. I work as a receptionist/admin assistant here in the US now ... its nice to be able to go to the loo when I want without having to leave a line of people anxiously waiting for their tickets! lol. You should be more than fine at 50wpm. I can only do 40wpm.

So you know exactly what I mean, I worked often at Guildford station and boy was that busy, especially on a Friday night left on your own to run the office, not a pleasant experience. With the que thing oh boy I know exactly where you are coming from, can I ask how did you become an administrive assistant here in the USA, you and I know we do a lot in the offices in England, Computers, phone, general office duties etc etc, how did you put it in a CV?. Sorry if I am asking to much but I do not know alot about this kind of stuff.

Oh sweet! I think you should do quite well! Would you have a long commute to downtown Seattle (where I assume all the law firms and big companies are)?

No not at all, infact the railway station is about a 10 minute drive away, but hubby works in Government just outside Seattle, so driving in would not be a problem either. hehehehe Know anyone in that field here?

Janice

Alas, we have hardly any clients in the Northwest. We had one - Washington Mutual - but they left the business for which we represented them.

Here are some samples of what's available in Seattle on craigslist.

Office Admin Assistant

Legal Assistant Trainee

I think something great can work out for you with some of the temp agencies. Maybe u can even get signed up for "temp to perm." You start as a temp and if you do well and you like them and they like you, they hire you permanently. Best of Luck!

50 per minute without error is pretty good. I think the real way to be able to test someone about their typing is to see how fast they can actually correct their typing... I've been able to peak at 95 before, i did have a couple errors but my typing is so natural I pick them up easy and i'm able to correct them
