Hi Folks

I am trying to figure out what is the requirement for typing, I can type 50 words a minute without getting a single word wrong, do you think this is acceptable for an office type job?? I thought once I have received my work authorization document I would try temping for a little while. Can someone please tell me what this will involve and what employers will expect out of me.

I use spell check.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

50 wpm sounds good for most things - though I think most secretaries / Personal Assistants are around 75-80wpm. What is it you are trying to break into?

I use spell check.
 don't we all.

Works - but not good to rely on it. The grammar checking is still pretty atrocious, and Word has an annoying habit of automatically correcting your spelling as you type - doesn't always choose the right word.

we USED to require 75wpm, but now that most lawyers and executive staffers are totally self-sufficient, we now accept 60wpm. my boss rarely asks the admin assts (artists formerly know as secretaries) to type anything. if anything hone your excel and powerpoint skills unless you are transcribing or court reporting.

I think if get up to 60 wpm, you won't have trouble getting temp assignments, but even at 50 you will be okay.

What the Employer will expect of you depends - if you do office work less typing for speed might be involved and moreso making charts and spreadsheets and record keeping. If its straight secretarial work, then speed typing might be more important.

An office type of enviroment, when I lived in England I worked for 5 years for the railway, I was a clerical officer. I would like to work in an office that was not on public show, I know that sounds funny but when I worked for the railway I worked in the Ticket Offices, not just one but all over Surrey and Hampshire, I dealt with the public on a daily basis and the majority were nice. I would just like to do something a little bit different.

if you want to freshen up, try typingtest.com. it will tell you exactly how fast you are and if you keep using it, you should speed up.

i've had a few admin. asst. jobs and i can't think of the last time anyone asked about speed. i think they gave more credence to flexibility and multi-tasking skills. if you have something extra, like being proficient in something like peachtree, quicken, powerpoint, access, SAP, or something relevant to their particular field, it will help you a great deal more than actual typing speed, in my opinion.

good luck!

No Nr Seattle Washington State

Oh sweet! I think you should do quite well! Would you have a long commute to downtown Seattle (where I assume all the law firms and big companies are)?

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

No not at all, infact the railway station is about a 10 minute drive away, but hubby works in Government just outside Seattle, so driving in would not be a problem either. hehehehe Know anyone in that field here?

I think most temp agencies will give you a test when you first apply. I did the tests last fall and scored pretty good on everything. You have to know all the major MS Office products like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Access. If you don't know them well, I think most community colleges have classes for them now, and even some have classes for the big software providers packages like SAP, Oracle and whoever else is left. (I used to work for JDE, who got bought out by PeopleSoft, and last I heard Oracle was looking to buy them out).

Good luck!
