Hi guys, just wanna tell you that this site has been helpful to me and my husband in getting my AOS approved yesterday. Thank you. Anyways, back to my question - how do i get an SSN? My situation is that we mailed our documents for AOS and EAD last March 19,2006 and USCIS got it around march 21,2006. Got my biometrics for both EAD and Aos last april 7, 2006. Then Got another letter from the USCIS for my interview dated May 25, 2006, which was yesterday- i got my AOS approved and have a I-551 stamped on my passport before my EAD has been decided. I hope you can help me with the guidelines/procedures and when is the best time to go to the local security office.

tata,

Congratulations, you're an LPR now - you don't need an EAD. Go apply for your SSN. Search for posts by mdyoung to be sure that you understand what documentation you should take with you.

Congratulations! That stamp is all you need, in a few more days you will get your GC in the mail. No need to wait for your EAD :)

The I-551 stamp along with your passport and birth certificate are all the documents you need if the name you want on the card is the name in your passport. You also need the application form SS-5

The only drawback to using the I-551 stamp as apposed to waiting for the card is you are less likely to clear SAVE with the stamp.

I would say best to get to the SSA office as soon as they open. That way you will hopefully get in and out before the office gets crowded.

I would say Mondays, day after a holiday and day after a benefit payment date would be the days to avoid.
