Well...here's the thing...you have your paperwork in. One difference does it take if they take 1 day or 1 month or 1 year or 1 decade to process it? Life is the same either way.

Hell, if they take long enough, you might even have citizenship before they remove conditions.

Mostly because of our travel plans early next year. We have the "one year extension" letter which should carry her through to mid-February of 2009. I suppose I'll need to make an appointment with the Boston service center for a passport stamp in case Vermont (who used to be so quick) is still on coffee break. Or is there another way (besides paying for "advanced parole")?

No, all you need, if you haven't yet been approved when your extension letter expires (one year after the expiration of the GC) is to go and get the I-551 stamp. They confirm that your case is still pending, and then stamp the passport. Easy peasy.

Sigh.. VSC has slowed down again this month.. Maybe half as many approvals as we saw the previous couple of months. And it looks like they haven't even started processing the applications from December (which is when TSC started forwarding their applications to VSC, effectively doubling the application rate).

We had relatively easy and speedy K-1 and AOS processes, so we don't mind a bit more waiting on the Removal of Conditions. But the unpredictability is still stressful. For example, there's always a chance of being called for an interview- but it's impossible to predict a schedule. The immigration issues are always on the back of your mind (at least for me).

JOURNEY HIGHLIGHTS

04/23/05: Sent fiance petition (I-129F) to VSC

10/26/05: K-1 visa in hand

02/17/06: Flight to U.S. - POE Anchorage

03/01/06: We got married!!

03/04/06: Applied for Adjustment of Status

07/31/06: Received 2-Year Green Card in the mail

04/08/08: Sent application for Removal of Conditions to VSC

03/20/09: Received 10-year Green Card in the mail

04/11/09: Mailed N-400 application to Lewisville, TX Lockbox

08/18/09: Citizenship interview in Garden City, NY

08/27/09: Sworn in as a U.S. Citizen in Brooklyn Court House

08/29/09: Applied for U.S. Passport (routine service)

09/25/09: Received U.S. Passport in the mail

* Our Journey is Complete ! *

Gotta pay to play (:

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

I agree it's grossly unfair for the one service center to be so fast and the other so obscenely slow... but there isn't anything we can do about it except wait.

Blame Congress. If it didn't need to "spread things around" to keep various districts and representatives happy, everything could be handled in one facility. Just imagine the efficiency gains by not having to transfer documents, staff, resources, and god only knows what else all around the country all the time.

Cassie is 100% correct, and just to add what Cassie said, "advanced parole" is for people who have not Adjusted Status yet... not for people who have already obtained their permanent residency, whether conditional or not. For a PR, the only time they would need to file anything before leaving the country, would be a Reentry Permit, and thats only if they plan to be outside of the US for more than 1 year, and less than 2.

And as far as VSC goes... YES, they DO SUCK!

I'm concerned my 1 year extension letter will expire before I get my green card. I originally filled December 07 at sucky Vermont. It sounds like I can make an info pass appointment to get the I-551 stamp to allow travel but what about employment? Will I technically not be able to work after the extension expires? Is there anything I can do?

Good look everyone!

Mark

the stamp is good for both travel and employment, it extends the validity of the extension letter.

Thank you Cassie! Do you know if you have to wait until the original letter expires to get the I-551 stamp or can you get it earlier?
