The U.S. invaded providing the terrorists the gun, but militant islam pulled the trigger. End of story.

BS. That's the most ridiculous BS I have heard in a long time. You still haven't gotten the memo that the AQ-Saddam link was nothing but a blatant lie put forth by the Bush White House to justify the invasion? Time for you to wake up, buddy.

I am not saying there was a connection. I am saying that militant islam is responsible for the 'insurgency' in Iraq. It is the cause. You need to get your head out of the sand and think for a minute.

But militant Islam wasn't in Iraq before the US et al went in.... Saddam had those elements largely under control as his regime was predominantly a secular one.

The removal of Saddam's regime and failure to secure the country in a timely manner (the fault of the defence department for not deploying sufficient troops) created this security nightmare and created the conditions that allowed extremist groups to flourish.

An insurgency was inevitable when there are so many disparate groups and warlords vying for their piece of the pie.

Out of curiosity... are you claiming that every single group involved in the insurgency is based on religious fanaticism?

No, but MOST are. Militant islam WAS in Iraq, but Saddam ruled with an iron fist and murdered thousands in the process. The insurgency will resolve itself when the people of Iraq refuse to tolerate their atrocities any longer. The ONLY way the people of Iraq can achieve peace is to put aside their differences without violence.

Saying that the insurgency is a direct result of the U.S. invasion is too simple. The problem is MUCH deeper than that. As I stated before, the U.S. invasion is the PROXIMATE cause. Islamo-fascism is the direct cause. It has been simmering and growing since Anwar Al Sadat was killed in Egypt.

Just for the record, I am no fan of Bush, but I dont care for the democrats either. I am so disgusted with the American government right now I don't know who to vote for.

I don't think its too simple - securing the borders of the country in an adequate and timely manner, which could only have been done had the defence department committed more troops would have prevented a lot of the destabilising elements entering Iraq from neighbouring countries.

Putting aside sectarian differences is not something that will happen anytime soon. You only need look at Israel / Palestine, Ireland or the former Yugoslavia to see how long those sorts of differences simmer beneath the surface. IMO this will keep the US embroiled in Iraq, to some degree or other for very many years.

Just better keep your fingers crossed the US government doesn't decide its our 'moral duty' to liberate Iran too...

If that was so, then we would have seen the sectarian violence in Iraq prior to and irrespective of the US marching in. Only, we did not. It ain't me that needs to get his head out of the sand. It sure ain't me.
