Traditionally, one slaughters a sheep for Eid al Adha, the next Eid, and not Eid al Fitr. Maybe it's a tradition in Morocco though? We usually do it through Islamic Relief, and it's never over $200, even in the countries where animals are most expensive (usually Palestine and Bosnia if I remember correctly).

One thing he should be worrying about right now is Zakat al Fitr, that needs to be paid before the Eid prayer.

As rahma said no sheep for this Eid, it's the next one. But $400 is about the going price for a good sheep there. That works out to something like 2800 dH, I think when we bought 2 sheep in March for my son's aqeeka it was like 5000 dH for both of them.

If you're donating money towards sheep through a relief agency the price could be less. My basis is on a family actually buying the sheep in Morocco themselves.

According to that site, when I press the determine my zakah amount button, I have to have over a certain amount stashed away before I can even think of giving zakat, correct? That's above and beyond what I have for my current expenses.

Yes its for the next Eid not this one. He already knows of a poor family that he is buying for. I just thought that $400 was a little high.

According to my husband paying up to $300 to $350 isn't too much to expect for the top quality sheep if you are in one of the larger cities such as Rabat or Casablanca. This is because they have to bring the sheep into the city. He said that if you go to one of the small farm cities where they raise the sheep you can get a better price. Of course he hasn't been there for almost 2 years, so things could have changed.

inshallah i will buy one(hopefully) but i will not give it all to a poor family

it should be like 3 parts one for your self and one for your family and your friends and the last part for poor people .

here it Egypt its about 300 bucks for good sheep

Nothing's impossible . Nothing's unreachable .When I am weary you make me stronger

This love is beautiful .So unforgettable . I feel no winter cold when we are together .

Will you stand by me ?!!!Hold on and never let me go .

Will you stand by me?!! With you i know i belong . When the story gets told .

When day turns into night .I look into your eyes . I see my future now .All the world and its wonder

This love wont fade away. And through the hardest days . I will never question us .You are the reason my only reason.

I'm blessed to find what i need in a world loosing hope. you are my only believe .

You make things right every time after time.....

Will you stand by me ?!!!

I love you so much and i miss you so much more .

I pay 180 to 200 US $ per sheep in Jordan.....for a nice sized Balad sheep (local). I like going around to deliver the meat myself along with tea, sugar, and rice. My very own United Way. ;)

The zakat in Jordan I think is usually 8 JD per family member...usually we just have my grandpa give it to some poor neighbors.

Mosques in the US also collect zakat before the Eid prayer.
