A document preparation service is for someone who intends to proceed pro se (do it themselves) and the service is for someone to help them fill out the forms - the person is not supposed to give legal advice or direction, just help with the forms - it's a very hard area, and one that's touchy for me (no offense, Journee) - as paralegals we fight really hard for recognition that we provide a valuable service - some of these self help companies give us a bad name, because people link them with paralegals -

How do bankruptcy courts look at document preparation services?

I am not 100% positive on a state by state basis - but typically they aren't even aware that someone else prepared the docs - bankruptcy is a little different, because it's a matter of calculating finances, etc.... The ones that really piss me off are the do it yourself divorces, etc... preparers - because i have done clinics, and have a really hard time seeing how you can prepare docs for someone getting a divorce and not give advice -

Most of these go somewhat unnoticed until an attorney starts losing clients or money and pays attention - then the bar usually tries to go after them.

You are right. But we basically provide the paperwork, look it it over and make sure that you have listed items correctly and give you additional info on how to proceed.

There servies here that do recieve some flack from Labarge and have been shut down. But for the most part all I can speak for is mine and I am kind of straight laced when it comes to it because I dont want to get i"n trouble" with this business because it is hard as hell to "get out".

For real! I only get 1 week of vacation and a few hours of sick leave per quarter but it has to be sick leave...docs note and all. It sucks

3 HOURS for 3 MONTHS for sick leave is very hard to count as a blessing but I will try for you

Yeah it is 1 hour a month to cover for doc appts. Then the 1 week a year vaca. I hate my job

And how do you suggest someone proceeds after having you prepare their documents?

Are you talking about Jack LaBarge the bankruptcy trustee? I've done work for him before.

Sum thing to celebrate! hope i can afford to come back ....maybe January for interview ???(all i want for xmas is another ticket...and more paid vaca time)......Hoping all this process is over before my retirement fund is completely gone....was my only 'nest egg' and it's half as much over the last month! Robbery! Wall street thieves....watch out.... i hear they are hanging out on beaches all over the Carib..
