Update: I'm in vietnam for about a month now. I submitted the marriage application and was interviewed today. The interview didn't go as smooth as i thought it was be. First of all, we did not bring any evidence or proof of a relationship. I thought that those proofs were required when i started the paper work for her visa. I left most of that back home. So the lady named Phuong did not take us and told us to come back with some sort of proof. We went and got some printed emails, phone calls, and mail that i sent to my wife. She accepted it and started to interview each of us one by one. There was two mistakes that was different in our answer. One was silly, I told my wife that i was studying to be an actuary but told Phuong that i was studying to be a professor. I quickly realize the mistake after she told me that my wife gave a different answer. The second mistake was uncalled for. She asked me do i have any siblings, I told her i have 1 older bro and two younger sis. She said my wife told her that my family have three children. My wife said she did say that i have one older bro and two younger sis. She even named them. The lady was not nice at us at all. I think it was because we did all the paper work ourselves. The first two questions she asked my wife was, did you get any help with the paperwork, and how did you know how to do it yourself? Anyway, she told us to come back a piece of paper stating that i was living with her. I brought that with some more proofs such as pictures and wedding invitation.

My wife and I are quite worry about this. Is getting married in Vietnam that hard? The paper stated that I should get my result 3/4. However she stamped that I should get my interview result a week after. The interview result a week later is what bothering me. Is it normal to get a interview result and a marriage result? Thanks

Yeah it would help to tell us what province so tu phap you had to go to maybe someone here has experience going there. Each place is different but the all speak corruption. You gotta give some coffee money if they are giving you a hard time. I can't remember correctly but I think I gave them around 2,000,000 Dong, Maybe more. We got the lady's phone number, the person who took our paper and did our interview, and the we called her to get updates on our paperwork and sorta push her since she took our coffee money already. She got our marriage papers within 3 weeks. After she interviewed us she told us on the spot that we got approved and to come a week later and pick up the marriage certificate.

it happened to me and my wife in 02/2008, we didn't make any mistakes, but so tu phap sent their guy to my wife's town to investigate, they came to the town twice asking the neighbors if they know me, when did we get married, is this a fake marriage blah blah, then they called us a week later to have a another interview with the police, they separated my wife and i into 2 rooms, they asked all kind of questions. luckily we matched every single question, they told us to go home and wait for so tu phap to call, i had to go back to the states, came back in may 2008 to sign that freaking marriage certificate.

they just want to make sure your marriage is real.

we literally gave the so tu phap guy a gift basket. a couple packs of 555. chocolate, gum, a couple bottles of victoria secret body spary for his wife, some of the eagle brand green cure-all ointment. all of this not hoping for any special treatment, but just to hope he wouldn't stiff us later. it took us around 45 days for the marriage cert.
