Hi,

I have my Interview scheduled for November 10.

I expect that I will do the oath on December 19. (but don’t know for sure)..

I know that I have to hand over my Green Card at the ceremony, and apply for the new US passport.

I was planning on going out of the country to celebrate Christmas with my family, but I don’t know if that is possible with the neutralization papers only in case I do not receive my new passport in time.

Can you please tell me if it is possible for me to travel between the date of ceremony and when I receive my new US passport.

Thank you

You can use your Naturalization Certificate to re-enter the U.S. after travel abroad.

The problem with applying for your passport before you leave the country is that you have to give up your Naturalization Certificate with your passport application, and if you don't get your passport back before you leave the U.S., you will have nothing to show that you are a U.S. citizen. You will get your Naturalization certificate back with your new passport.

I just recently became a U.S. citizen, and I'm going to Canada next weekend, so I am not going to apply for my U.S. passport until after I get back.

I am traveling on December 24.

Dont think you will get a passport that quickly, even appearing in person. Without a US passport you will not be allowed to travel as you must use a US passport to exit and enter the US.

I would try calling the passport office closest to you and ask them how long it would take if you were to apply on the 20th Dec but need to fly on the 24th.

I was planning on going out of the country to celebrate Christmas with my family, but I don't know if that is possible with the neutralization papers only in case I do not receive my new passport in time.

Wow! If I had been issued neutralization papers, I don't think I'd carry them with me.... lest I be neutralized!

:P

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

This was an issue for me last year. I was informed that you have to re-enter the US with a valid US passport. There was an exception in place for Canada, but that might already have been phased out as of last fall.

If you can point me to some legal jargon where it is states that a US citizen can legally enter the country with his naturalization certificate only, then I am very curious to know about it.

This is partially correct but most is wrong..and itdoes not apply to every country..

You can exit the US with your naturalization certificate but you can not enter the US with your certificate only..

I would advise to apply for passport first as some agency does expedite it for 48 hours but you have to pay extra amount in a really emergency case.. To avoid any problems in the future.
