epiphany and fantasy are not synonymous.

I like JP Morgan chase. I have an account with them, and several also with USAA.

I used to work for one of the big 4 banks in Australia, for 17 years, you really have to watch them closely, no matter where you are. Australia suffered a recession several years ago, and has bounced back, its all a matter of how the government handles it.

And as for credit unions. Most credit unions are underwritten by a big bank anyways, they are less stable than big banks in my opinion.

A credit union is a cooperative financial institution that is owned and controlled by its members I am unaware of any underwriting by big banks. Sometimes you see membership tied to a major corporation or industry.

YMMV

OK, underwritten may of been a poor choice of word. They are not wholly, and solely owned by the member. Big banks have a stake in credit unions. Even though credit unions may not have fees on accounts etc, when it come to ther financial trabsactions such as overseas transactions, cashing large cheques, etc etc, those fees are some what higher theough the c/u because it is outsourced to the big banks. C/u's are unable to do a lot of bigger transactions in house.

Please think about this. Many services of credit unions are run through a commercial respondent bank to handle many transactions. I believe that credit unions are poor in credit card handling because they often outsource or contract with many different companies to handle the transactions vs. a large bank which has the capabilities to handle these transactions in house.

Also think about this. Credit unions can have different charters; they are state regulated or federally regulated. Bellco, for example, did change, a few years ago, from a Federal Credit Union to a State Regulated Credit Union; they probably did this because of the restrictive nature of the feredereal regulation.

Like those that we see with the Feds. Ironic.

University credit unions... otoh...

Anyway if I see anything about Chase starting to charge up the wazoo for things WaMu did not, then it will be bye bye for them.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

A bank may have a service relationship with a credit union but it has no ownership stake..... My credit union is a lot more stable than most of the banks in my area.

YMMV

damn, and another one bites the dust.

i am shopping around for a bank to open an account for my Habib... and so far, it seems like Chase is the safest option, no? i already have two accounts with Chase, and i hate them.....

Habib doesn't understand why he can't just keep the $$ under the mattress, and i'm having a hard time finding a reason why it's a bad idea (i mean, other than the fact that all of you now know our hiding spot.)
