I am a permanent resident of Canada so i got an RFE for not sending proof of legal residence here. Just for all who are in the same situation, send proof of legal residence with the IV package.

They usually ask for passport bio page but if yo are not a citizen of Canada than you send residence card. We learn from our mistakes.

My RFE mistake was not sending proof of relationship for my sister since she was a co-sponsor for my wife's AOS. Apparently anyone sending an I-864A also has to send proof of relationship as well. Birth certificate is fine but it has to be from both the sponsor and the household member.

I-130/I-485/I-765 to Chicago Lockbox

My stupid RFE was:

Didn't sign the I-130. All was returned since the others were based on a valid I-130.

What I learned:

Double-check and make sure you sign everything. Cost us at least a week. NOA1s received 5/31/11.

Stupid RFE:

Small version of Marriage Certificate

What I Learned:

Here in Alberta, Canada, you can get two types of Marriage Certificates when you apply for your license; the large version (most couples choose to frame this), and the small version, which is more commonly used for proof of marriage, etc. We just got the small one, as there is nearly no difference between the large and small versions (besides stating the bride/groom's place of birth), and we didn't think we would need the large version. Sure enough, NVC does. Groan. The day I found out about the RFE, I called an operator immediately to ask what we needed, flew to the registry office, and paid extra to have it couriered to us. Thank goodness we do electronic processing, we will have the certificate in our hands today, and it will be submitted tonight.

My stupid RFE was:

As the petitioner, I forgot to send my original birth certificate and marriage certificates (both previous and present). I only realized later that these documents were needed if you filed for IR-5. There is no mention of these documents on LingChe guide which I religiously followed.

What I learned:

Don't just rely on shortcuts and guides, read in detail NVC instructions.

we had a stupid RFE for evidence showing that our first marriages were done. we have both been married twice before. we sent in evidence (including letter requiring certification of second divorce before we could marry each other) showing our current marriage is legal. majorly redundant...

My Stupid RFE:

I did not sign part 2 of I-864a.

What I learned:

Even if you looked at your packet a thousand times, have someone else take a look at it (even if it's just a family member) so they can check for things you may not have seen. Or do a very, very thorough look through your paperwork, line by line.

I have a very bad news to share - I messed up totally and am having to send I-864 again - going to USPS Office.:bonk: :bonk: :bonk:

We had sent AOS on 8/3 and since we didn't get any response till 8/13, we send out an email with a copy of the AOS packet. By 8/15 the original AOS was processed and the case was closed on 8/15.

But our inquiry email was processed on 8/16 and they issued a RFE now asking us to send signed I-864 again. I tried to plead with a supervisor but she gave two option - i) she can put up to her highier authority to ignore the email but it will take time (20 business days) and then if they decide that I should send it, then it gets further delayed (20 business days) or ii) I submit I-864 quickly and it will get processed quickly (20 Business days).

The lesson I learned and I want other to be aware is never resend your documents in email.
