Can someone on a student VISA legally work? If yes, how? Can you get a social security number on a student VISA?

You need the answer to your first question because that determines the answer to the second.

Exactly what visa did you arrive on? J, F, other?

If the answer to work authorization is YES then you just simply go to the SSA office an apply.

Yes you can, but only in-campus. Back in the days when I used to be one, one just needed to go to the Social Security Admin. and request a SSN. As far as I know now you need to actually have a job offer for them to assign you a SSN.

It needs to be an in-campus job unless you are on a co-op, intern or OPT job. Check with your office of Intl. Programs to get advised on this matter.

P.S. This is a forum based on family sponsorship (mainly being married to a US Citizen), if it happens to be that you are married to one while being a student visa holder, you are not longer a student visa holder but a foreign spouse waiting to adjust status (green card), the only way you can work legally is to either wait to have your green card or you employment authorization card.

1) The USCIS sent out a reminder email yesterday about their "flexibility". One part addresses working while on a student visa.

2) Talk with the person at your school who handles the foreign student paperwork and ask them what your options are.

3) Call the visa information line or email them: You can talk with a real person after waiting on hold for about ten minutes.

Contacting Visa Services - Information is available to the public by telephone at the Visa Services, Public Inquiries Division at (202) 663-1225.
