Hi everyone, just want to be enlightened about issue regarding permanent resident stay outside US for more than 6 months but less than 1 year. I am worried about my mom, she's an immigrant. She wants to go back to the Philippines for more than 6 months. Do you think she will not lose her permanent resident status? What will happen at POE? I am getting paranoid because we had a terrible experience at DTW wayback 2003. When she had her tourist visa before. She stayed 9 months here in US, of course with extension approval by immigration but then she came back to US after 1 month of stay (Philippines) and she was denied to enter as a tourist visa. After 20 hours of travel, we flew back to Manila for another 20 hours....I do not want this to happen again.. If someone can help me so that I can advise my mom what to do....by the way, she has no intention of applying for naturalization.. she just want to keep her immigrant status..

I was a Permanent Resident (GC) till May 2008, but have naturalized recently.. I was always overseas and never lived in the US.. But we make sure that we always coe back every year para hindi marevoked ang greencard.. Every 10 months we travel going back to the US, and there is no problem..

Your Mom is okay to stay in the Philippines provided na hindi siya magtatagal ng hanggang 10 months... She needs to go back to the US bago mag ikalabing isang buwan para mameet ang physical presence nya sa US.. If she is planning to stay in the Philippines more than a year, she needs to apply for re entry I think ( I am not sure but search some topics regarding resident staying overseas more than a year)

She's fine as long as she doesn't stay out of the US for more than a year. My aunt did this for years and a few times had a hard time at POE because some officers kept asking her why she was outside of the country for so long if she was a permanent resident.
