"McCain courts Irish-Americans at forum

US Republican Party presidential candidate John McCain's address before the Irish-American Presidential Forum in Scranton, Pennsylvania on 22 September.

Thank you for the honor of appearing with you here today. The Irish-American Presidential Forum has been held since 1984, and since its inception there has been a lack of Republicans. And while my affection for Democrats and independents is deep and wide, I am proud to be the first Republican to appear before the Forum.

You are very kind to invite someone with a name like McCain, a Scots-Irish descendent whose family came to the New World some generations ago. I hope you won't hold it against us - I do try to get back to the island as often as possible.

I'd like to talk about some issues that are of particular concern to Irish-Americans, but before I do, I'd like to take a couple minutes to talk about an issue that is concerning to us all, and that is the economic crisis that we have all been following since last week.

On Friday, I laid out my plan for addressing this crisis. At its heart, my plan is about keeping people in their homes and safeguarding the life savings of all Americans by protecting our financial system and capital markets. These are my priorities.

Senator Obama has declined to put forth a plan of his own. At a time of crisis, when leadership is needed, Senator Obama has simply not provided it...."

He's making statments to support his tax proposals by citing Irelands 10% corp tax as an example of a sucess story.

Of course he neglected to mention that it's actually 12.5%, that VAT is 21% and PAYE is higher (including employers PAYE). This man is full of BS.

The funny thing is that from the transcript of that speech, he says he's going to address that matter later in the speech, and then doesn't. I suppose he's trying to create the impression to the white illegals that he's got some kind of plan for them, but then doesn't say anything specific, because of course, any plan he has could be used by brown illegals too.

He says that he is inspired by the NI peace process, but that was achieved by sworn enemies talking to each other. Something he's not willing to do, heck, he's not even sure if he wants to meet with his own allies (Spains PM). I'll say it again, this man is full of BS.

He probably thinks the Irish Peace Process has to do with breaking up a drunken brawl at a cousin's wedding back in ye auld country.

Obama doesn't have time to deal with the Irish. In his defense, Obama eats Lucky Charms cereal daily in solidarity with the wee people out there.

"BARACK OBAMA'S campaign has rejected claims by a leading campaigner for undocumented Irish immigrants that the Democratic presidential candidate is giving a cold shoulder to Irish-American activists and has shown little interest in issues of concern to the community.

Ciarán Staunton, deputy chairman of the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform, told RTÉ Radio yesterday that Mr Obama's attitude was in marked contrast to that of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who addressed an Irish American Forum in Scranton, Pennsylvania, this week.

"We've had great access to Senator McCain. Every event we've invited him to over the past two years, both in Washington and in the Bronx, he has shown up to," he said.

"I spent half an hour talking with him about the issue and other Irish-American issues and he didn't need notes or staff. He gets the issue. This is in contrast to his opponent. We have as yet been unable to get a hold of Barack Obama to turn up to any campaigns," Mr Staunton said.

Denis McDonough, senior foreign policy adviser to Mr Obama, told The Irish Times yesterday that the campaign has been in touch with the Irish American Forum and he hopes to find a suitable date for Mr Obama to address it."

I thought Obama gave up smoking? Now he'll claim he experimented with shamrock smoking in his youth.

Why did he decide to grow a beard like Bin Laden?

No problem, he'll a make a rainbow and slip away from the allegations.

The local Irish pub has managed to get visas for "authentic" Irish bar staff flown in direct from the Emerald Isle (all 12 of them)! All great bar staff admittedly and you couldn't meet a nice bunch of people. Amazed me though that they were all given work visas based on being Irish and being able to pull a pint.

I think it is the Morrison (???) visa program, and if I remember right it is only a temporary visa. It is basically only for Irish citizens.

Oh I didn't know that. One of the girls has been here a couple of years so I guess its a 3 or 5 year visa? My mother, who is Irish born, and in her 70s, is adamant the Irish are getting visas because "everyone loves the Irish".
