Ok. I know this is a last minute post considering my flight leaves in 9 hours and I'm still not packed.... but does anyone know if there is a limit to the bags that can be checked in when flying to SGN airport. I have two boxes, one with gift the other with paperwork. Both under 50 pounds. Plus one carry one... and Possible another with more gifts of clothes that I have to bring for a friend. I think I was told the last time that there was a limit but when I got to baggage claim in HCMC - there seemed to be a Lot of people with Way more than me. So if anyone can shed some light it would help. Thanks :D

Check with your airline but generally for flights originating to and from the United States (assuming that's where you are flying from) there is a 2 piece checked luggage limit, with each piece not exceeding 50lbs. You can check in more if you pay the excess baggage fee. But again, best to check with your airline.

Most airlines are now charging for the second piece now.

Isnt that just with domestic flights?

Check with your airlines. Rules are changing monthly, it seems. Last I heard, most airlines will give you 2 free checked luggaes for an international flight. I even exceeded the 50 lbs. limit for both pieces, but was not charged extra. You can also bring 1 carry-on and 1 "personal". The carry-on will have to be able to fit in the overhead compartment. The "personal" item is something like a purse, briefcase, laptop (in appropriate case), backpack, or something that can generally fit under the seat in front of you (an exception would be something like an umbrella).

You can always check more luggage - you'll just be paying extra. If you have a bunch of gifts, then I'd pack it in a cardboard shipping box so you can discard it and avoid paying extra on the return flight. (Or better yet, leave the empty suitcase with your fiancee for her to use when she comes.)

Ooops. I just noticed his flight has already left ... oh well. :)

LOL. Well at least when he returns we can find out what happened and if we are going to get charged.

Just for the record, I used Korean Air and checked 2 suitcases at exactly 50 lbs. apiece. No problem. Except I was loaded with contraband. No one checked in Hanoi.

On the way back to the U.S., we had a total of 6 pieces of checked luggage at EXACTLY 23 kg apiece. We paid extra for 2 of them. I don't remember how much now, but it wasn't all that much compared to if you shipped those items by DHL or something similar. We had no problems getting our luggage to the USA.
