Work Authorisation

Hi there everybody i'm hoping someone can help me with this query. I'm sure i've read somewhere that some points of entry can grant you an authorisation to work when you enter the US on your K1 visa. Is this correct or do you have to apply once you get to your destination in the US.

The reason i'm asking is probably like most of you out there, I want to be able to work as soon as I get to the US so I can bring money in for my fiancee and I to help make things easier. The sooner I can apply for work the better. I understand you can apply for a SSN as soon as you enter the US which will allow me to open a bank accound and obtain driving licence but the authorisation to work is also a big thing.

Can anyone recommend the best way to obtain the authroisation to work and if you can obtain it from immigration at a point of entry, what point of entry would be best to go through?

Thanks in advance,

Stuart :)

I have looked into this and it seems that it is New York, it is not a definate that you get it,, but seems that they do give it to you and if you go that route and they dont stamp your passport with it you can always ask nicely.

When I get my visa and move I will get an indirect flight that goes via New York just for this

Good Luck, and I hope some othe members will be able to give you more options

Thanks. From what i've seen it appears to always be JFK in New York that does it. Myself flying from the UK will probably fly with Continental who fly into Newark in New York so I hope they do the same!!

Candidly - you've kind of over-simplified things. First - you can apply for a SSN about 2 weeks after entering the US, then it takes (typically) 2 weeks to get. Secondly - many people have had problems getting a DL quickly - each state is different to some degree on what is required but the short answer (in many, not all, cases) is, an I-94 that is expiring soon won't do. (It did for us, but I'm 99% sure we got lucky.)

The Temp. EAD from JFK - yes, it's the only POE that routinely issues the stamp - it's good for 90 days. The good news is, yes - it allows you to work. The bad news is - since it's only a 90-day permit - many employers will not hire those holding such a permit (rightfully or not, it's a reality). So - it's not as much use as one might think - plus keep in mind, a SSN might take a month to get (maybe longer) so that 90-days is now more like 60-days...

Best bet - focus on the SSN - try for a DL - get married and file for AOS/EAD - EAD will take about 60-90 days which means you'll be much more employable while you wait out the AOS process.

Just my experience - not etched in stone.
