Seems to me they will consider the fact you called to have it switched on that you didn't know it was on in the first place. Just because a cable runs to your house, doesn't mean you are using it ;) . I have a cable modem, and accidentally  discovered with a t-splitter, extra piece of cable plugged into the back of the tv I have cable. Anyway the cable man was out doing some work this week, my cable no longer functions :crying: , I think they figured out they were pumping free cable to anyone with internet access lol! It was nice while it lasted.

I'm hoping this is what will happen. Neither of us could afford to pay a fee or get in trouble right now.

I had heard that some cable companies where having some problems with splitting the analogue signal off their high speed internet access; apparently you can’t have one without the other! I believe some cable companies have started to use traps to essentially kill off the extra TV signal, bye, bye free TV :( .. unfortunately for us our cable provider charges about $10.00 extra if you just want cable internet without the basic TV package. It ends up being slightly cheaper for us just to get a basic TV package and standard cable internet.

If they ask just say your did not know, they have to prove that you knew, plus the house does not belong to you so that makes this a little different. Good Luck with it.

Janice

I think your right, that’s too much proving for the cable company and if they wanted to issue any penalties for already being connected I’m sure we can simply deduct that from next months so called “rent” :D .. I don’t believe our landlord could really do much? What’s would they do? Kick us out for not paying our pirate cable bill?

Most likely you are fine. Most cable companies leave service on in rental places when a tenant moves out. They generally give away a free month of service to the new tenant to get them used to watching the programming and using the service. They then try and sell you the product .. it has been very useful for marketing.

I work for the local cable company here and I do know that is common practice for this company as well as one of the national companies.
