Do you think the not being paid issue also exists within the US Embassy? I only ask as I just applied for a job in Lagos at the Embassy.

Thanks

Wow WhidbeyGirl, what job is that and how did you find it? That would be my next plan if for some reason Mike does not get his visa on his 2nd interview.

Just go to the US Embassy in Nigeria website. In the search box type in employment, then there will be several choices, choose the one that says Human Resources.

There is a list there of all jobs available at the Embassy. There are some that require that you have a family member working at an Embassy, they are the EFM's jobs. It's frustrating that those jobs are only available to family members because I am qualified for a few of them!! Also, if you want to work in Nigeria there is an AWESOME forum that lists jobs daily, it's www.nigeriabestforum.com, I stumbled across it when I was trying to learn more about my fiancé and his culture. I am known as IslandGirl or IG there.

Yes you are correct it is very sad! A friend of mine from Kenya was a teacher there and once she came to the states she had to take more classes before she was allowed to teach here as well. My fiance he went to college he trained in his skill for 3 years (intern) and he will have to prob take more classes as well once he is here. So all the college classes they take its like they don't or wont honor it at all!

Its unbelievable how the is so many educated people in Africa who can not use there skills. And some even get to America and still cannot get a job in there given skill. I met a nigerian doctor who studied in Sweden and then went back to migeria and then came to the states and then had to go back to medical school to get get american certicates and still not working in the medical field but doing something lower. What sad news.

Juss to add my fiance makes at times less then $100.00 a month. What breaks my heart is that he works so hard!!! He only takes one day off but makes that lil. I cried to the point that I had to calm down as that hurts me so bad! But he did not know I cried and I did not say anything to him about it as I don't want to make him feel bad (I could never do that). But he went to college and trained in his skill three years but does not make what He is Worth! :(

the case is much like my too, though i make little more than $100 dollar but before i got there my boss has change my wages 3 times, even he promised that he will increase it before the begining of this year till today, i am still where im. i just know that it God that still keeping till now.

since he has not pay me for months, i have to make arrangement with him that i will be coming every sunday and whatever i get it will be part of my wages, now it, it now owning me about 3 months to be pay.

its a comon thing especially when you are working for one man business, though it also happened with big companies either by government of private. but not all, there some company that arepaying on time.

Well he finally had the man pay him but he could only pay him half. He said he would give the other half when he had it. We all come upon hard times. But what I don't like is if the man knew he did not have the $ why seek out my fiance to do the work knowing he could not pay? Plus that can put someone back with rent etc. My fiance said he was shocked that the client did not pay as he has never done that before. When he tried to call him he would not answer etc.. That was more upsetting as I know he saw my fiance was trying to call him but he was trying to avoid him for a while vs. just saying im sorry i don't have the money.

And that is a shame that you were told your pay would be more but has not gone up. Sorry to hear that!

Not being paid in Africa is pretty common... sad but true. My SO had a job when we first met that he would go to day in and day out and not be paid. He finally left that job and went to work for someone else, a better place but.... once his employer learned of his plans to come here... the payment problems began. It's a sad state of affairs....

My question to the OP is..... Have you ever been to Africa? Do you REALLY want to go to Nigeria and work? I've been there and I can tell you as much as I love the country and the people... I would be hard pressed to go there to work and live (especially if my fiance/husband wasn't even from there). It's a hard life they live and even though an American citizen working for the government would be paid as expected and live in the better part of Lagos, it would be an extremely hard life!

I'm not trying to discourage anyone... we considered my moving to Nigeria and actually I considered doing the same thing but.... once you have been to that Embassy and you see how bitter and angry the government employees are.... you soon see that it's not a good life and they are only doing their time as Embassy employees have a tour of duty sorta like the military, once their tour is over... they're outta there.

JMO... I would do some serious thinking and some very serious prayer before I applied for a job at any Embassy.

hugs

Any part of africa would be hard, Its not a matter of working and living there the opinoin is would a person adjust to the lifestyle. i have lived in burkina Faso it is hard and boring life, no hot water , no clean water, electricity cutting off, If a person can cope with that its fine. It up the to the person.
