But seriously has anyone actually gone from Reg forum to Reg forum and asked how those folks feel about eliminating those forums? Would they move to another website if there were no Regional forums here, or would they "integrate" and be less isolational? Do they feel " segregated" here or is it self emposed isolationalism because that's what they want from this website?

eta-I honestly think (my opinion) that as long as people keep on a clicking-Ewok will accomodate the majority vote, to keep members here. I see nothing wrong with that. :)

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

We self-impose isolation on ourselves in the real world too, it's how people generally are.

I think that's called agoraphobia.

There's a pill for that. ;)

Gotta air drop that pill over the lily white suburbs of northern jersey.....

If I can use the PI subforum as an example. There seems to be a prevailing reputation as of late, of several of the Filipinas who post as being catty and nasty towards non-Filipino members. They in turn feel they've been subjected to harassment and ridicule. On the few occasions that they have ventured out of their subforum, a cat fight ensues. People need to keep in mind that not every VJ member posts, and many just read. I'll bet if there was a poll conducted, many Filipinos using VJ would say they feel they are mistreated by non-filipino members. Whether that perception is grounded in reality or not, the problem is these perceptions persist on all sides. And one of the most effective ways to dissolve those perceptions about people from different regions of the world is to not compartmentalize the members according to countries of origin.

It's not about choice. It's about fostering a social environment where everyone who is on the Visa Journey towards living here in the good 'ol USA, feels like they belong.

I just caught up on the new posts and had an interesting thought. Having been to many big cities with strong multi-ethnic backgrounds there are always communities such as "Filipino town", "Korea Town", "China Town", etc.. In general the larger community embraces these regional areas as a place where local ethnic groups can find a sanctuary of friends and culture similar to their own. It is also a source of pride for many people to show of their cultures and to be proud of their heritage. The communities often encourage (although not always) people to visit and share in their culture. Members of these communities also understand that they are a part of the larger city culture and you will find a beautiful blend of their particular culture and the traditional "American" city scape.

Now I think in the Regional Forums on this site the analogy is not quite perfect however it is similar. I think that people in these forums should be welcoming of all members. I also think that just like in the real world, people should be willing to visit outside these areas and learn more about other cultures and the diverse membership around the site. I would encourage people to meet other members from all kinds of backgrounds around the site -- diversity and being open to other cultures and ideas is certainly a wonderful thing.
