Agreed, the bottom line at VJ is to keep ad revenue pouring in. Anything that reduces membership is a no-go.

;)

Well, of course it is. There isn't anything wrong with that.

The site was created, it's helped alot of people--Someone put a lot of time and effort into creating it--so what if money is made off of it ( after all it's not the 1st immigration website to make money-or be into advertising...and IMO there is another website that's even MORE heavily into advertising than VJ)...is that wrong too? If THAT website has regional forums has anyone said they need to remove it's regional forums?

Back On Topic....

Still begs the question, why remove something that some of the members enjoy?

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

It's not like there aren't probably about at least 1000 other websites where the PI members couldn't go to speak Tagalog.

Or Russian, German, Spanis, etc..etc..

Like I said before M, I've clearly stated my reasons in this thread.

If you're bored today and looking for someone to argue with, I'd suggest you take it to your usual source of entertainment - the Regional Forums.

There is no good reason to. The purpose of VJ is to make someone money, not to disseminate immigration information. When people have fun, they stick around. Ka-ching! Win-win for everyone.

I mean, seriously, if you wanted to learn about immigration, you'd go to USCIS.GOV (and if you're too retarded to read that site you'd hire a lawyer).

No you didn't...I was responding to the winkie smiley....Came across to me that it was meaning something like it was some big, nasty secret that VJ paid for itself somehow.

And I agree w/you.

Money is GOOD! Making money, spending money, saving money......I don't care what anyone thinks about this-but we live in a capitalist society, making money IS a good thing! I like it anyway. ( I'll probably get called shallow now), but I don't care...I reap the rewards of 9 years at college, military service, self investment and decent fiscal planning on mine and Mark's immigration. So if Ewok is reaping a penny or two out of the traffic on VJ-more power to him is what I say.

You have stated reasons, and I am responding to them, that's all.

I told you I was not being argumentative, clearly I didn't realize that your comments cannot be quoted or you cannot be asked to expound upon them without you accusing of me "looking for an arguement". I am not.

Personally I don't hang out in the Regional forums, or try and get "entertainment" from fighting online (well, not on VJ anyway).

So what would be wrong with Russian and British threads?

I think this would be bad for one of the reasons you're opposed to regional forums, in that it would be even more difficult to find information. If you've got multiple topics happening in a single thread, it's a mess. And if you've got multiple region-specific threads ("China: Share your recipes here!", "China: Footbinding tips!", "China: Oh noes we got denied!") going on in a single forum, then you might as well have sub-forums.

The suggestion I've offered up before (as an alternative IF the Regionals were dissolved) would be to create an "Around the World" forum for cultural postings. I'm sure Russian and British and Muslim and Phillipina and lactos intollerant threads would evolve. In that environment, though, I believe there would be less likelihood of people isolating themselves. And I do think this isolation occurs quite by accident in many cases.

I actually like this idea...I think it would work well in addition to regional forums. I for one would participate in both a regional and a world forum. It would be a great place to go for filers who had made a lot of friends in the "<month> Filers" threads from the status reports sub-forum and want to keep up with them.

I agree with you that people tend to isolate themselves into the regional forums. I don't know to what extent that is a problem, or if it is even really a problem, but I do agree that there is some self-imposed isolation going on, of which I myself am guilty. How this affects the health and vitality of the VJ community is something that should be looked at carefully.
