THE GREAT DEPRESSION

With the economic situation in this country in the pits and Bush digging deeper, I caught

an article earlier in the week from a Washington politician who asserted the situation as

it is in the country, “is worst”, than it was at the time the Great Depression started.

Taking great interest to the Great Depression remark so boldly made in Washington, I

looked for the article in my newspaper the next day, the same newspaper that brought me

that quote. I cannot find it, neither on google..So I think I know why that remark was

buried and swept under the rug. Presidential elections and that quote is taboo.

Today Bush asked for $700 Billion for financial bailouts. So I have to ask you this:

I wonder if any of you “know” what the Great Depression is. Please do not let this

question lead you to believe that I might think that you are stupid or something…No, that

is not why I ask.

I might even hope, that some of you lived during the Great Depression like I did. I would

really appreciate if you can tell me how that horrendous tragedy of the Great Depression

affected you. Did you lose any sibling to starvation or lost that sibling forever, never again

to see him/her, like I did?

One of my favorite novelist John Steinbeck wrote “The Grapes of Wrath” in 1940 that to

me, falls way short of what the Great Depression catastrophic consequences really did to

this country. Steinbeck glamorizes the tragedy by using the family of Tom Joad to portray

the plight of the worst of the dust bowl farmers, draught and industry. He sold his

book the Hollywood and a movie was made…What`s new?

So what can you add? Can you give me some feedback, because I might just write a thread

of my own experiences during that time in Hell.

I read something like that in the Boston Metro this morning on the train regarding Bush borrowing money from the Federal Reserve or something. I'm scratching my head here because my knowledge of economics is weak despite economics 101, 102, 103 in college:) But they, that was a long time ago and it was an early morning class so what can I say:)

Just how is this money being made? Where does the federal reserve get the money it is so graciously giving out to "help" these companies?

And isnt inflation where more cash is made than needed? Inflation, if that is what will happen if the fed reserve keeps creating money out of nothing, is going to lead us into economical turmoil like Zimbabwe which to my knowledge has the highest inflation rate in the world! A loaf of bread there costs something like a billion or something Zimbabwean currency....the average person cannot afford it.

Hm.....would that hve anything to do with the rise in food costs?

Just my 2 cents worth from the peanut gallery....

I might add one thing. Greenspan told the powers that be (Congress) that this would happen if something was not done sooner way before it happened. He was castigated and asked to resign. Now we pay the piper.

Thus Congress deserves it's ratings.

100% of incumbents in the Congress should be losing their job. Yet it's pretty much guaranteed most will keep it, regardless of incompetence. Thanks politics.

Agree and always have. Both parties are a joke and rubber stamp everything anyway.

luckytxn I have always tried to respond to all comments made to my threads...Yours is the only one that I will comment

today...Nonetheless what I say here goes to all those who commented...

First I will thank them all for their comments..

You seem to have spent some time taking notice of what is going on within our governement...I really appreciate

your understanding...Without pointing to specifics in your comments, here, that have been several to my thread

I want you to know that you are obviously right..."Why fret over it?"...It just so happens that deep scars remain

with me that make it very hard for me to forget...I only fear for what might happen to your children...God forbid..

If something like that should ever be repeated, and our children are caught right in the middle, as I was.

Because this issue boils down to a political issue, I have decided to abandon my intent to write a thread on that.

So to address even the ones who felt offended because I mentioned Bush, rest in peace and hope for the best...For

all of us.

Nighthawk. I used to fret over our country and everything going on. It just is not worth it. I only have one vote and use that lone vote for every election since I was able to. I vote how I want and feel good doing it.

The great depression was a defining moment in our and the world history. I have heard references about the Great depression every time there is financial turmoil. I expected to hear it again when this financial crisis was coming and was not disappointed. Stay around long enough and you will hear it again.

I heard that loud and clear luckytxn. You are right on all counts.

I just don`t have too much time left to stick around and I worry about people like you.

That`s all.

Thank you luckytxn. It is always my pleasure to run into someone with an adult attitude.

A robust Nietzchean happiness is about to roar through you like a galloping herd of wild foreplay-experts, Nighthawk.

Try to stop gabbing with the so-called 'prestigious people' who have no original thoughts.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
