These won't be needed for several months, but I want to at least know how best to obtain the documentation needed from packet 3. I found the packet 3 list (http://germany.usembassy.gov/visa/iv_documents.html), but I'm not clear on where to obtain some of the items & have a couple questions.

* Birth certificates

- Does my German fiancé need my birth certificate?

* Police certificates (it says "Police certificates are required for each visa applicant aged 16 years or older; if the applicant * is living in their country of nationality at their current residence for more than 6 months * lived in a different country for more than 12 months * was arrested for any reason, regardless of how long they lived there ")

- Does he need one if he has no criminal record and has only ever lived in Germany?

* Military records

- Does anyone know the best way to obtain these? My fiancé has some papers from during his draft service, but they don't look comprehensive. I'm curious what others have used for this requirement and how they obtained them.

* Vaccination Requirements (pdf)

- He's got some sort of booklet with his vaccination records; is that sufficient proof of his current vaccinations?

* Medical Examination (pdf)

- Did anyone have there's done the same day as the interview or after it? My fiancé is in Bremen and it's a royal problem to get him to the listed physicians. I'm hoping he can schedule it for the time he's interviewed in Frankfurt.

Birth certificate: yes, I think your birth certificate is needed (don't quite remember though - maybe somebody else knows better)

Police certificate: yes, your fiance's police certificate is required. It is called polizeiliches Führungszeugnis and can be applied for at city hall at the place where he lives. This certificate will be valid for all of Germany no matter if he lived in the same town all his life or has moved around. Just one piece of paper! If he never ran into problems with the law the certificate will say so.

Military records: no idea how to get that

Vaccinations: yes the little book is a good starting point. He should take that to the medical and they will take the information and transcribe it to an official worksheet for the US consulate. If additional vaccinations are required he will either get them at the medical or needs to obtain them from his own doctor. Remind him to ask for a copy of this worksheet as it will come in handy at the adjustment of status stage here in the US.

Medical exam: can be done on the day of the interview - however, the visa will only be issued once the consulate has received the medical package. In Frankfurt no appointment is needed for the medical - you just show up and get in line.

he wont need your birth certific, just his!

and he need to get a police certific of every country he lived since his 16th birthday (not from the US).

with the vaccination he can just go to his normal doc with the list that you can find on the embassy website and tell them to give him what he needs. most vaccinations are free in germany!

Thanks for the information so far. I'm still hoping someone can help me find out how to obtain the military records. Since there's required service in Germany for males, I'm guessing someone here on VJ can help me, please!

he wont need your birth certific, just his!

Both birth certificates are required - from the petioner and the beneficiary!

About the military certificates, have him call the consulate in Frankfurt (or write an email) and ask, what exactly they need or how detailed. When I was there for my interview all people working there were German, they would not have a problem understanding his current papers from the German military.

I'm going to bump my thread again, because I still need help on the military records. What did others use for this, and where did you request them? I know my SO can't be the only one who served, given the mandatory service in Germany...

Maybe he should contact his local office for the paperwork. If I remember correctly there is an office called Kreiswehrersatzamt (or something like that) which is probably the place where his local military district keeps records. Just a thought....

He should have gotten a signed and stamped release paper also noting his conduct and service time for the conscripted period. Suppose that otherwise the Kreiswehrersatzamt will provide additional papers. Otherwise just call the embassy as to what they need. Personally intend to simply bring a certified copy of the aforementioned release papers.
