From timelines it looks like receipt 10 days or so after filing, and Bio about a month after filing.

Yes, you can use receipt number to check status in USCIS.GOV

Every file is unique and every processing center is different. Your file could move extremely fast or go the opposite direction. Nobody really knows how the USCIS functions. That's why we come here and put our time lines up. It gives us a sort of understanding of how the process timelines are working. Look at peoples timelines and you can judge by that the time it might take to get your file moving along. Remember that by no means that your file will move at the same speed as somebody else's file. If you sent your application in Sept, check for Sept N-400 Threads.

To answer your 2nd question. Yes you can check it online, but chances are it might not really be updated. Status updates online are awesome but like everything else, USCIS is way too busy and under staffed to update information about files online.

Hope this helps, and good luck with your process.

i sent out my N400 on Sep 13, 08 I wonder How long does it take to get receipt notice and can I use receipt number to check my status? also, how long for biometric after receive receipt notice?

I mailed my N400 on 9/9/08 and was not received until the 15th which was the priority date. I got my NOA today that was mailed on the 22nd and I noticed that my application number was actually the number that was written on my cashed check. And it works on USCIS website. How long for bio after notice received? it depends on one's service center..my notice say 425 days.

No. The PO Box where you sent the N400 is only for N400 applications same goes with the I-751 PO Box etc..

I wrote "thank you Jesus!!" on mine. Knowing that America is a religious country, I thought it might help.

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

A watched pot never boils, can't tell you the panic, frustration, inconvenience, and expense of getting that ten year green card for my wife and daughter, that is something you have got to have if not some kind of stamp in your current valid foreign passport or that I-94 thingy. We took a different attitude with citizenship, but strangely enough, it moved three times as fast as the posted processing dates.

Did get teed off when my wife should have received the oath notice at the end of her interview and became a squeaky wheel again, as US citizenship or the potential of it, puts you in a state of limbo again as you cannot plan trips or your life, but first I found out it was their practice to give that oath notice at the end of the interview.

What a disorganized organization, they have failed repeatedly to keep their scheduled appointments making us wait as long as 2 1/2 hours, with anyone else, would walk out, but they know they have a chain around your neck and can jerk it.

This time I just addressed the envelop in cursive, weighted it, and put on first class stamps instead of a neat typed addressed label, that seemed to get much faster action and had that personalized touch.

Ha, should be happy it's all over with, but still shell-shocked from dealing with this agency for over five years, am under some stupid impression that our government is suppose to be the servants of the people. It's our name that is on their paychecks, they seemed to have forgotten that, probably time for a strong reminder, but that would have to be done with a revolution. Anybody game for making tea in the Boston Harbor?

MoonInLove - the 425 days on your notice is the anticipated time until your application process is completed(I'm not sure if it is considered the interview, or the oath). Biometrics appointment will happen much quicker - anticipate it within 4-6 weeks of your priority date.

As for the accuracy of the 425 days - who knows LOL. My application priority date (also Los Angeles office) was Sept 2007 - my interview date was almost 365 days exactly. The time frame quoted on my initial receipt was the same as yours - 425 days. My understanding is that they have caught up somewhat on the huge backlog created by last years fees increase, and you will get processed in much less than the 425 days estimate. GoodLuck!

BTW - My online status has never been updated - still sitting there saying my application has been received. LOL

N400 at California SC, Field office- Los Angeles

Sep 3, 2007 Application Mailed

Sep 12, 2007 - Priority date

Nov 9,2007 - check cashed

Nov 20,2007 - NOA1: "expect to be notified within 425 days of this notice",

Jan 10, 2008 - fingerprints appointment (letter lost due to mailing address receipted incorrectly)

Feb 7, 2008 - fingerprints done (took about 10 min - as a walk-in)

Sept 8, 2008 - Interview date (letter received Jul 18) - rescheduled at my request

Jan 6, 2009 - Interview date

Feb 26, 2009 - Citizenship Oath

*online status "case received Oct 29", no touches showing.

Oh yeah, my bad. It was actually the timeframe till the interview notice which I hope will be lesser days of waiting hehehe.. I just hope they'll fixed the backlog so it's worth the 675 dollars increase in fees. And yeah they just touched my case on their website, as of 9/23/08. Maybe they're working on my bio notice perhaps. I cross my fingers on that.. :)
