New one-year US visa for Irish

A new one-year working visa arrangement is being put in place between Ireland and the US.

The 'J-Visa' will be available to any Irish person with a secondary school education or a qualification in a trade.

The new visa would allow people travel and work in the US in a similar manner to the existing J1 Visa.

Recipients would be allowed stay in the US for one year some of the details of the visa have not yet been decided however such as the upper age limit for those who qualify.

Around 20,000 visas are expected to be issued annually and the arrangement would also allow American citizens come and work in Ireland for a year.

It is being reported that the deal could be signed as early as today, however a Department of Foreign Affairs source has revealed that it could be a number of months before the agreement is in place...

Belfast Telegraph also on RTE News

I wonder what this could mean?.. This could be a very interesting deal for both countries!... May it'll help with our "undocumented" or "illegal" workers in the US?

Interesting post, Aidan. And potentially very useful for those who want to be together but aren't yet ready for marriage or want to test living together.

I suspect their will be an age limit when they finalize the deal.

That is a very interesting visa.

Usually they require people to be specialized in a field or at the very least have a BA.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

It is interesting, and as it is also true that the Irish have a rather quaint habit of coming to the US and then never leaving, I'm surprised there isn't more uproar at the news.

Yeap, NY has a lot of Irish overstays.

But they're Irish. They're cool.

Not like those goddamn Mexicans :protest:

The Irish aren't brown...therefore they are ok :P;)

I look forward to more details, as I've always fancied living over there for a short time. I missed out on being able to get an Irish passport by a generation.

Though to be honest I doubt I could afford living in Ireland these days!

The difference is they will be coming here by the book, rather than jumping the border as they see fit; then calling the host nation's government racist.

So, because they come here legally, and then stay illegally beyond their visa expiration that's somehow better?

I realize that not everyone takes this particular view :)

Which is probably one reason this has been created in the first place. They're coming anyway so might as well make it legal.

I'd love to see people's reaction if the government did the same for citizens south of the border.

I suspect there will also be a home residency requirement.

Whoa cool! I want to apply as soon as Rey gets his citizenship. Um.

Yes here in Queens we love our illegal Irish. It's so funny that people have no problem with immigrants from a rich country coming and living here illegally, when they might be just fine at home. I was in a bar in Queens a few months ago and met several Irish who had arrest warrants out for them back home. But Mexican families, who really might not have enough back home and probably don't have criminal records... oh noes!
