it's such a familiar pattern:

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Todd Palin is refusing to testify in an abuse-of-power investigation into his wife, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Palin had been subpoenaed to appear Friday before Alaska lawmakers to testify as to whether Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan was fired because he refused to dismiss a state trooper who had gone through a bitter divorce with Sarah Palin's sister.

McCain-Palin spokesman Ed O'Callaghan said Thursday that Todd Palin no longer believes the Legislature's investigation is legitimate.

A key lawmaker says the stonewalling of witnesses is likely to stall the probe until after Election Day.

Sarah Palin at first welcomed the investigation but opposes it now as the Republican candidate for vice president.

Just a little problem: obstruction of justice, disrespect for separation of powers come to mind right off.

Respect for the law and the Constitution might be a non-issue to you and the Republicans, but it matters to some of us.

The case has nothing to with the U.S. Consitution but there is a question of whether Alaska's laws cover the issue. Clinton had his problems with state troops in Arkansas but nothing came of it. It's no big deal except for maybe scoring political points.

I have to say... isn't this the sort of thing that should be followed to its natural conclusion?

Stonewalling an ethics probe is dodgy to say the least.

Pretty much. But why would Bushesque Republicans let ethics and potential law violations get in their way?

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I think your siggy sums it up nicely... that and this little tidbit from you "I'm not insensitive, I just don't fcuking care!"

Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented immigrant" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensedregistered pharmacist". (because somebody gives a damn)

Its obvious to see why they're doing it - a scandal would not only damage Palin, but also do damage to the McCain campaign.

Still - it makes for some interesting priorities. Since there is the possibility that in a VP capacity she could very well be making political appointments...

I don't think anything will come of it - they'll stall the investigation until after the election when she'll be too big and important to have to deal with something like a local ethics probe - and likely the guy who was fired will get some pay-off to keep his mouth shut.

Didn't Clinton have the same thing with those sexual harrassment cases?

The Clintons have seen their fair share of scandal, and Obama's friendships and affiliations have been called into question on a regular basis. Why are Dems not outraged by that? Double standards.

In point of fact - I think all ethics issues should be investigated, not least of course when they have to do (directly) with the misuse of power and authority.

The VP doesn't make appointments but acts as an agent of the president. VPs do other things but not appointments.

"The Vice President of the United States[1] is the first person in the presidential line of succession, becoming the new President of the United States upon the death, resignation, or removal of the president. Every presidential term ends on January 20 of the year immediately after a presidential election. As designated by the Constitution of the United States, the vice president also serves as the President of the Senate, and may break tie votes in that chamber.[2] He or she may be assigned additional duties by the president but, as the Constitution assigns no executive powers to the vice president, in performing such duties he or she acts only as an agent of the president."
