Are you sure he's not confusing it with the brown packet you get after you have had your interview with the embassy? That's the packet you shouldn't open.

There is no reason why you can't open it as you will have to make copies of it to send to USCIS, never send the original as you will need it for the interview.

I have my partner's divorce decree at home, open. By the way his is 6 pages long. It depends on the State or country to how long they are.

As laura & tom stated above I have my partner's divorce decree at home, open.

That should answer your question! I agree with laura and tom, it is the MBE that you must not open. The mysterious brown envelope is given to you after your interview with the embassy. Please read advice thoroughly. The best of luck with your upcoming interview!!

I find that strange as you are not dealing with USCIS anymore. You are dealing with the US Embassy. Maybe he doesn't want you to see something in it or to lose it? As I said before the only envelope you are not allowed to open is the one you will receive from the embassy.

Hmmmm, if you can't trust him...should you really be marrying him?

There are other documents that are sealed, and only to be opened by the Embassy,

sometimes Police Clearance Certificates, and sometimes Medical Reports.

The brown envelope is NOT the only envelope that should not be opened.

Just as divorce decrees will vary (some single page, some 3 pages, some 6 pages),

there may also be variances in the way documents are required for presentation at your interview.

The embassy may be able to give you an absolute answer to this, but I see the bigger problem

in communication and trust between you and your future spouse. If it's true and you open it, then you don't trust him.

If it's not true, then he doesn't trust you...or maybe doesn't want you to know something.

Either way, I think you two should discuss it before breaking any further trust.

Envelopes can be replaced much easier than trust.

Best of luck to both of you.

I think you could open it . Its a divorce decree, probably he meant sometimes divorces cannot be seen by no other parties other than the plantiff and defendent but thats only in the courthouse or county it was filed in. Unless he doe not want you too see something in it. I agree with ling ling.

maybe because i'm not very good in english thats why u didn't get my point, the reason why i want to open the sealed divorce paper envelope is to find out how many pages have his divorce paper because i read one vj here that he's fiance sent only 1 page of the divorce paper insted of 2 pages and that cause them problem in their interview, i don't want that incident happen to me thats the reason i want to check the divorce paper and look if theres no problem, I trust my fiance very much because i'am his first girlfriend after 25 years of divorce and he is very honest and god fearing man he told me the uscis instruction is to put the divorce decree in a sealed brown envelope and only the CO will open that , but maybe you are correct missunderstanding with the instruction from uscis...thanks for the responds godbless!

No, USCIS does not provide any instruction as to whether the foreign fiance opens any envelopes sent from the petitioner. It is "allowed" to send things directly to the Consulate, when those providing them, wish to keep the information confidential. This is somewhat common with affidavits of support, particularly from co-sponsors. A one page divorce decree should really only contain names and dates, which is information the visa applicant actually needs, in my opinion.

If your fiance asked you not to open the envelope and you agree, I would think you'd want to live up to your agreement. You might want to make sure you know the name(s) of any former spouse(s) and the dates of divorce in case you are asked at the interview, as these are common questions.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...
Understanding the big picture is priceless. Anonymous

Divorce decrees come many different ways. It all depends on the State. In MA, you get a 1 page certified (raised seal) document. In Texas I believe it's many, many, many pages.

You can get certified copies any time for a small fee from the County in which he was originally married, so don't worry about 'sending originals'.

As pushbrk stated, if you have an agreement with your fiance then perhaps you should honor that. But i'd surely want to know why. ;) Also, it's imperative that you know all you can about his prior marriage as it's most likely to be addressed at your interview.
