Tax Returns Question for I-864

My wife has copied everything that we have for the required tax years. I was just curious if we have to send in the whole Tax Return form, the pages that the accountant or accounting software prints out, or is it just a one page return letter that the IRS sends to you?

I've already ordered IRS Tax Transcripts so I think that should be good additional proof but as I am not able to see what my wife is photocopying I wanted to be sure that I got her to photocopy the right forms to send in. Once she does, she will be sending in the I-864 and DS-230 at the same time.

A tax return consists of the Form 1040 and ALL schedules and attachments including W-2s/1099s...

Tax transcripts can be submitted in lieu of returns

You don't need tax returns with W2s if you have your tax transcripts from the IRS.

Thanks Diana (and fwaguy). I just wanted to make sure that it was form 1040 and not something that the gov't sends to you. I have ordered IRS Tax transcripts for my wife and she's going to submit both. She cannot find her Tax return for 2005 but she does have the tax returns for the past 3 years (2007, 2006 and 2005) so I hope it's enough.

Someone on this thread http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=131935 said that he just submitted the most current year's Tax return and W-2 plus the IRS tax transcript. Hope that's enough since my wife has only started working fulltime since last year, the years before that I was paying most of her expenses plus school. She definitely makes enough now to meet the minimum requirements and more.

Just three years of tax info is all that is required

Just send in the tax transcripts. You don't need anything else. They prefer the transcripts.

Copies of the tax returns are a waste of your paper. Save it for more important things to send with the DS-230.

The instructions say to only send tax returns for the most recent year. Most people send the last three years but if you only have tax info for 2007, you should be ok.

Very true, but for me we got the RFE because they wanted the last three years - just sorta depends - and if you have it just flood them with paperwork lol - but they were fast on the RFE once it got back to them

I agree, the best thing is to give them way more than what the actual instructions say.
