Hey guys!

Just got back from the DMV and i am officially a Maryland driver! Yaaaay!!!! This time i remembered to actually STOP al all STOP signs :)

And the best part is that the DL has my new name on it! I guess there is a reason why i did not pass it the first time...so i can have it in my new name! Not because i am a dumbass Romanian who can't read STOP signs...:D

It is a nice feeling to have your first document with your married name on it :)

NICH. i fall in the same medical time frame ### NICK. So i guess we'll have to wait and see.

Speaking of chest x rays, what happens to the one that they give us to carry through immigration? I still have mine as nobody seemed interested in it at my POE?

John

I don't think those are intended for POE. They aren't radiologists, so they would never look at it. I think they give it to you or else they would throw it away. It's not like you're going to return to that office and they might want to refer to it for some future comparison, like maybe your family doctor would. I guess if you end up having to have the skin test in the US and it turned out positive, you could whip out your chest x-ray for the civil surgeon to examine and determine what he puts on the medical form. But in general, I don't think there is a whole lot of purpose for that x-ray as far as the USCIS or Customs and Border Protection people are concerned, once the doctor ticked off the boxes at your medical.

It's just so dumb that they do an x-ray for the purpose of seeing if you have TB and tick off that you don't. Then later you have to have a skin test and if it's positive, they do an x-ray to see if you have TB. Hello? What's wrong with this picture? Am I missing something?

Congratulations on the driver's license Alina. Nick, it seems, may not be able to get one until he gets a green card. Or you must have a visa that is good for a long period. We haven't pursued it yet because he didn't have a SSN anyway at the time we went to the DMV. They made a new rule in Texas that was effective Oct. 1. Again, we were just on the wrong side of the time frame. I thought we might call the state office and question any exceptions. It's written for other kinds of visa holders and since he is actually allowed to stay, even though the visa date is only 90 days, maybe we can get some kind of waiver. This K1 stuff is unknown territory to small town Social Security and DMV offices.

We've also been trying to figure out how we get his stuff when the ship arrives at the Port of Houston. We are doing it ourselves. The boat agent gave me a number for Customs in Houston. That guy was really easy. He said no forms needed because he tries to make it as simple as possible. We show him a list of contents and the passport/visa pages and he clears the shipment to be picked up. It's about 23 boxes. Just another chapter in the life of an immigrant.

Hey Pandora! Have you heard from USCIS yet?

We got the NOA1 notices for AOS, EAD, and AP today. I changed my timeline to say filed Oct 13, since they put that date on the notice. It says:

Received Date: Oct 13, 2008

Notice Date: Oct 17, 2008

I registered the numbers online at USCIS. I couldn't even remember my login details. How could that be? I used to check it 10 times a day. LOL. Anyway, I logged in eventually and there's a place to add new entries. So now instead of just one case it has 4. The old I-129F Petition is still there and 3 new ones.

Hellllooooooooooooo :)

Well, happily married... and now filling out our AOS papers. We hope to send them this week.

We've applied for new/changed ss cards but since they wont be here for two weeks (or so) we're just going to send the paperwork without his. He's also going to wait to get his drivers license because he is able to drive in MA for up to a year on his international without me having to pay the extra for car insurance. Bargain!

We are very much looking forward to being done with U.S. immigration for a while!

Hi Kim. So happy to see you!!!!

Nick got the Biomentric appointment letter today. He goes Nov. 13 to Houston. Some progress, but who cares? He's here and the time waiting on USCIS isn't stressful to me anymore. I am so happy right now. I'm not the Cymbalta lady anymore. (American TV commercial about a med for depression.) I used to watch that droopy, frumpy, sad lady and say, "oh no, I'm turning into her." Other times I would just say I was turning into a crazy cat lady. I just love being married to Nick and having him here.

Nick didn't have his SS card when we filed so just put NONE in all the blanks. About the car insurance. I don't think it costs anymore for me to add him because they just insure the car, not the driver. But she said just wait until he gets sorted out with a license, etc. (Did I already say that somewhere in this thread?? Oh well, I said it again. LOL)

How were you deemed eligible to apply for DL? I want to start the process for my husband.

Hey! sorry i missed your question yesterday.

This is the website where you can find info about applying for a DL in MD.

http://www.marylandmva.com/DriverServ/Apply/foreign.htm

If you already have a DL form your home country you will be able to get a regular DL. If you don't you will have to apply for a learner's permit first.

You need to have a valid I-94 to be eligible. if it is already expired you will have to wait until you get your work permit.

I noticed they made some changes after actober 8 so make sure you check that out also. Good luck!

Oh yes, a great night for the little girl from Transylvania. :halloween:

Happy Halloween to you too. :girlwerewolf2xn:

Surely Kim has mailed her papers. And I guess your next step will be getting the biometrics appointment.

We went to Houston yesterday to clear customs for Nick's stuff. The ship is in port, but the container is held for customs inspection which means the container is going to be x-rayed before it can leave the port. He only has one pallet of goods in the container. That's pretty normal they told us. It should be released and at a warehouse by Tuesday. So instead of doing the the custom forms and power of attorney for a broker to clear customs, we went ourselves to the Customs and Border Protection office. It took about 1 minute to do. The agent was super nice and didn't even require any custom forms to be filled out. And the best part is the original shipper is going to refund around 100 pounds because that was part of their charges up front. This whole process just keeps costing money, money, money. We had to pay the steamship agent who handles getting the shipment from the port to the warehouse $465. We went from the Customs guy to the agent to pay and hand them the clearance. Now we can go to the warehouse and get the boxes once they arrive there. And where are we going to put 23 boxes of stuff? I don't know, but this weekend needs to be a junk clean out at my house.
