Second in the broadcast network competition to talk to Sarah Palin: Katie Couric.

The CBS anchor will spend two days on the road with the Republican vice presidential candidate as well as presidential hopeful John McCain, the network said Tuesday.

Couric's interview material will be aired Sept. 29 and 30 on the "CBS Evening News" and "The Early Show."

It's timed for just before the Oct. 2 vice presidential debate between Palin and Democrat Joe Biden.

ABC's Charles Gibson had the first in-depth network interview with Palin last week. She's also talking to Fox News Channel's Sean Hannity this week.

There's no word on whether Couric's interview material will appear on "60 Minutes," which competed hard to get the first Palin interview.

Awarding Couric the interview also appears to be a clear message from the McCain campaign to NBC News. Republicans have been unhappy with NBC, primarily because of the active support for Barack Obama voiced by MSNBC's Keith Olbermann.

So while Gibson and Couric have interviews with Palin, NBC's Brian Williams — who anchors the top-rated evening news program — has been snubbed so far.

I'm sure we'll all get the comprehensive, in-depth interview we all want. Not

Likely the agreement to do the interview came with all sorts of "you will not ask about, X Y & Z"

Making assumptions are you? I'm sure they'll be covering only "girly" stuff too.......

Sheesh!

Sheesh!

Like to be a fly on the wall during the negotiations for the interview. I can see it now -- all softballs pitched underhand.

I'd have respect for her if she did go ahead with interviewing at the so-called biased network. Clearly McCain is afraid Palin can't handle the heat and therefore won't allow the interview.

Seriously, if she can't handle an NBC interview, she can't handle the Vice Presidency.

Everyone cries sexism if her credentials are question, but we're all just supposed to sit back and allow her kid-glove treatment with the networks. I've never seen such a thing with prior VP candidates. Why should she get special treatment? Surely not because she's a woman. Ya can't have it both ways, folks.

Give me the highlights. This is certainly not something worth breaking my streak of not turning on the TV.

Couric: Do you support our troops?

Couric: Can you really see Russia from Alaska?

Couric: Do you really live in igloos out there?

Why is it we tolerate this sort of stage management? Isn't the media supposed to ask difficult questions of political candidates?

The lot of you clearly need some remedial reading comprehension training. Where does it say in that article that there was any agreements on context?

This is simply your (all of you) biased opinion.......

Actually, Katie Couric, woman or not, gives some of the hardest interviews ever. I hope she sticks a ton of hard questions at her and although I'm sure all of Palin's talking points will be covered, I hope Katie makes her sweat.

I'm not sure any of you remember but she had an impromptu interview with George H. W. Bush - as she was taking a tour with Barbara Bush at the White House. He just intended to walk by and say hello to Katie, but then she began to ask him some very difficult questions out of nowhere about the Iran-Contra affair.

I don't think she's going to softball the interview. This could be a coup d'etat waiting to happen.

Politically biased? Or simply colored by the quality of previous stage-managed television interviews?

I don't think the media here asks tough questions of political candidates. They aren't aggressive enough - largely because of perceptions of unfair bias if they push too hard.

I hope she doesn't. I'll certainly watch it.
