We are talking about going back to Nigeria for a visit / traditional wedding ceremony next year. I just remembered that my baby and I will need visas. Does anyone know if my son will need a passport? He is only 6 months old. What kind of visa will we be eligible for now? Last time I used the visitor one. Since my hubby is a Nigerian citizen, will our baby need a visa? Also, how long do they take to get? I know the visitor one only took about one month.

Ok thanks everyone.

ALL American citizens need a passport to travel. I went to Morocco with my 10mo. old and he had to get a passport.... (argh). I'm assuming the baby will also need a visa but I'm not sure on that one!

Here is the site that will tell you about passports for minors. Hope that helps.

Whether or not the baby will require a visa entering Nigeria depends on whether or not the baby is considered a Nigerian Citizen, whether or not the baby can get a Nigerian passport, and whether or not you wish to have the baby enter Nigeria on a Nigerian Passport.

I also understand that as the spouse of a Nigerian Citizen, you also may be eligible for a Nigerian Passport. THese types of inquires should be made to your local Nigerian Consulate or Embassy.

That is interesting, I never thought of getting him a Nigerian passport. I went to the site for the Nigerian CO in DC and couldnt figure out what I needed. I guess I will email them.

Thanks all for your input.

you're going to Nigeria and which is not like any organized place. Since your husband is a Nigeria, your child is considered a Nigerian, so if you dont have a passport for the child, all your husband will need is a $20 bribe for a nigerian immigration officer to let your child him. But, you may not get to try it out as you will not be able to leave here without a passport and a visa.

My daughter was born in Nigeria, and i did not get her a nigerian passport, but American. She came over twice to the states and was not giving any problem to re-enter nigeria since her mother holds a Nigerian passport and i'm assuming the same will apply to you since your husband is a nigerian.

It's much easier for you to get a visa than getting a passport from the consul in NY or DC. what you can do is let the child go to Naija with US passport and if you wish, you may apply for the Naija passport in Naija. It's gonna be much cheaper and quicker, as long as you're willing to pay some bribes to expedite the process.

best of luck.

That's a great question, I was wondering that myself. According to the Nigerian Constitution all children of Nigerian parents (even one parent) is a nigerian citizen regardless of where they were born. But in Nigeria children do not get passports, they are added to their parent's passport. If you travel with your husband he could possibly use his nigerian passport and add the baby's name to it. Just use the baby's American passport to get him back into America (I guess).

I am pregnant right now but we're not yet married. The baby is due in May and we will hopefully be going to Nigeria by November to get married. I have written to the nigerian embassy in Washington D.C. to find out if I can get the baby a Nigerian passport (since the father will not be with us and we can't add the baby to his) or if I have to get the baby an American passport with a nigerian visa. I wrote them some weeks ago and have yet to get a response.

I will let you know as soon as/if they respond to me. If you get any information can you please keep us posted, I would also love to know what you find out. I think it's safest to get the baby an American passport no matter what you do just because of returning home. You can get it quickly if you have plane tickets already or expidite the process for an extra charge. I'd hate to get the baby a Nigerian visa on top of everything for an extra $100 if I don't have to.

That is great information. I think I would be scared putting him on my husbands passport, since the US may not let him back in. I'm a little worried of the bribe thing. We did half to do that for other stuff, but I don't know if I would want to chance it for this issue. I will let you know what other information I find out.

Congrats on your soon arrival. I hope you and your hubby can be reunited soon.

Since he is younger than 16 he can be added to your husband's passport. You can apply for that. If you go to the nigerian embassy website. http://www.nigeriaembassyusa.org. Then click on the consular and imigration link. There is an application there if you click on the link "passport form" Also you can call them for additional questions, their number is on the site. Perhaps when you get to nigeria then you can apply for a nigerian passport for him which would be easier in the long run and you can always go back to this website if you need to renew it. Their website has info about this. Good luck
