I haven't yet received my EAD card, but that is (fingers crossed) the next thing that is going to happen in my AOS application. I am adjusting from the VWP, received both my NOA1's and had my biometrics appointment, i cant wait to have this card in hand as being around the house 24/7 is driving me nuts. But my question is once i receive the card where do i then go from there? Do i apply for jobs using this card with a number on it, or do i use this card to apply for and receive a social security number which i can then use to work and open a bank account? (although i am already on my Wife's account.) How does it all work? Remember i am adjusting from the VWP so i was wondering if the process is slightly different, and with the EAD card, is there anywhere you cannot work?

Regards and thanks to all who took the time to read my question,

Richard

You will have to apply for your SS card to work even though you have the EAD. Your SS number is what you put on job apps, not the number from your EAD.

Yes, you will get your SSN before AOS is approved. Once you have EAD in hand you have to go to your local SS office to apply for your card, i believe Gary had his card in like 5-7 days after that.

Yes, you can now apply for a SS# at your local social security office. When I went they asked for my EAD card, my birth certificate and passport. I got my SS card about 2 weeks later. You will need that 8-digit SS# in order to get a job.

You can start applying for work now and just let them know, in your interview, that you have work authorization and are just in the process of receiving a SS#.

My SS card said (Authorized to work only with DHS approval) which basically means that an employer would have to see a EAD card with it.

As for where you can/ can't work - You can work nearly anywhere you like. Most government jobs require that you be a US citizen so that is your only limitation as far as I know.

I hope that was helpful.

Sorry I didn't read your post right - I thought that you had received your EAD already. Basically, what I was saying is that you need EAD to apply for work and need both EAD and SS# to be employed.

I think you can apply for a SS# now (provided you have a AOS receipt letter from USICS).
