Hello everyone hope everyones journey is going well. Ok here's the storey my bro get engaged and things aren't working out.He brought his fiance from Afghanistan and going back will make things worse. can i apply for asylum for her in hopes they can patch things up.Thanks VJer's

Suggest you read up on asylum:

http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/men...00045f3d6a1RCRD

Then contact an attorney.

The little I read on the link above, she would not be excluded from applying for asylum due to not honoring the K-1 visa and getting married. She will need to meet certain requirements to prove asylum is warranted.

Does anybody marry for love anymore?

I don't understand why everybody wants to be in this country. It is not all it's hyped up to be.

I know, some people have it worst in their home countries but marrying for papers is sad...really sad...

AOS Approved on 10-17-08 (details in profile)

Removal of Conditions on 07-19-10

In this tedious process, we tend to forget that this is all worth it.

I love my hubby beyond anything in this world.

if I could sell our house and business for a fair price, I would move to my wifes country next week. but it looks like we have to wait some years for the housing market to turn around. we are in the process of buying land for housing there. we will just hold off building till we sell here first

Same here, we want to pay off my hubby's student loans and then move in a couple of years.

Lili, how are you? Congrats on your interview date!!!!

Sorry but I can't help to take the bait. I know you mean well, but I don't think you -- or I, for that matter -- are really in a position to judge the motivations of the woman who is the subject of this thread. I bet you would understand the desire to be in this country if you were a woman in Afghanistan-- especially one who is "damaged goods" because her fiance, for whatever reason, did not marry her after the two of them spent some time together in the US. The OP doesn't say whether it was her brother who broke off the engagement, if so, I'm not surprised he wants to help her since his change of heart puts her in a terrible, potentially life-threatening situation. Possibly the notion that one might "marry for love" is completely foreign to the woman (in many cultures marriages are arranged on other bases), or it might be an option she would very much love to have-- and maybe she really does love the man who now wants to marry her. In any event, if the OP's assessment about the dangers the woman would face if returning to Afghanistan are correct, she has strong incentives to settle for a marriage that simply offers her safety and maybe some comfort.

To the OP: the best thing you can do for your brother's ex-fiance is to consult with a good immigration lawyer. Also, if you think you (or she) might qualify for free legal aid, look into pro bono type organizations that specialize in refugee law. In NYC, I can think of Human Rights First and Sanctuary for Families. In the past others have mentioned Catholic Charities. Best of luck!

Hey Carpe Diem,

long time no hear from you! :)

I agree with you but there has to be another option. And there are other countries over the world, the sky is the limit. Some other countries might allow for an easier immigration process. Oh well, like you said it is hard for me to judge coming from France and all.

I don't get that either. For some reason some people believe that by just walking off of the plane you will be handed a butt load of money. Lesson here, there are opportunities here yes, but you had better be prepared to work your A$$ off for years before you see any reward. Especially being an immigrant, you will have to work even harder than someone that was raised here would have to. This country is not for the lazy and weak.

My husband's country does not have the opportunities we have here, I would not want to live there without money, but the lifestyle there is so much more relaxed.

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

thanks again for your time. I understand the concept of K1 but love can be very strange especially when your fiancee is in another continent. I m gonna try my hardest to keep her here and not have to go back to backwardistan! I have set up a consultation already and hope to get things started!

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.
