Deterrence works. She impeded deterrence.

It works great at dropping the murder rate, doesn't it? Criminals are terrified of the death penalty. Please, that is lame.

Don't look now, but you sound like a liberal. Them's librul talking points in favor of 'treating' criminals versus punishing them.

I'm all for punishing criminals. Fear of punishment doesn't stop crime. Wake up, read the paper, watch the news, see what's going on in the real world. I know it's hard for you to belive, but there is more to life than VJ off topic. I know it sounds frightening, but I think you should give it a try. [W]hy all this attention paid to the second banana on the ticket?

You know why, dontcha?

Because Republicans weren't that enamoured of McCain before he chose the super-Conservative running mate? Because McCain will die in his first term of office? Because Palin's rimless glasses mean you can see her pretty eyes?

Deterrence works.

Ah yes, maybe deterence as defined in Saudi Arabia... If our definition of "deterrence" was effective, please tell me then why do we have so many repeat offenders in almost all categories of crimes...

Because we release them...

They don't fear it because it is rarely applied, and when it is the actual execution is years away.

Days later, Palin fired its chief proponent, Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan, after he declined to dismiss a state trooper Palin accused of threatening her own family members. Palin has said she fired Monegan because she wanted to move his department in a "new direction," and he was not being "a team player on budgeting issues." The dismissal is now at the center of a hotly-contested investigation by the state legislature.

The status of the plan, which would have "fast-tracked" sex crime cases via a dedicated group that included specially-trained investigators, judges and prosecutors, is unknown. "I'd ask the governor," said one official with knowledge of the plan. Numerous inquiries to Palin's campaign spokeswoman went unreturned.

The story isn't about rape or child abuse but how Monegan was fired. Alaska had crime problems before Palin but there was no big increase in forcible rape and violent overall went down so the story is a ruse and not a clever one at that. How come we aren't hearing about Illinois or Delaware? They were doing great we'd hear about how Obama cleaned up Illinois.

Just a note here.

Rape is an awful thing, and I think anyone convicted of rape should be horribly tortured before being executed. Just to be clear.

However.....the vast majority of this raping that is going on in Anchorage is going on in "native villages". These are places that are off the road system and often quite lawless and wild - with rampant alcoholism. These are people who want to live out in the middle of nowhere - quite remotely - and keep to themselves. There is a lot of sexual abuse of minors by family members and other really horrible #### going on. It's also typical in these towns that everyone knows everyone (if they're not related to them as well) and there is a real culture of "keep everything quiet and to ourselves." No one wants to get stuck in the white man's court system. As a result, it's all too frequent for drunk daddy or grand daddy to come home, diddle the small daughter or grand daughter or daughter in law, or whomever - and then go out on a night on the "town", drink some more, and rape a neighbor or two. The next day, after all the tears and such, people often either keep quiet (the culturally acceptable thing to do), or make up with the perp. It's just awful.

I'm not making this up. I have a buddy who is a State Trooper whose job it is to investigate this stuff and it's what he tells me. It's also "local knowledge" of sorts.

In this kind of environment, the state can only do so much. If people don't talk, then what can you do? If people don't acknowledge and do something about their alcoholism, then what can you do? There are plenty of free programs for these people to take advantage of to work on these issues. You can build the facilities and invite or beg people to come, but unless you're willing to lock people up for being alcoholics, there isn't much you can do - especially when there is a whole culture of political sensitivity/correctness to be concerned about.

Just an FYI. I am a Palin hater - don't get me wrong. I thought you guys should be aware of what this "rape epidemic" is really about. If you would break out the statistics between places on the road system and places off the road system, you would see quite a difference.

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

You could try to elaborate on following related issues:

-Politically motivated issues vs. real issues affecting a candidate's performance

-The relative strengths of candidates on crime.

-Posters who don't seem to have a point and post anyway.

I suggest you tackle the last one since you apparently haven't been following the news lately.
