Applying for SSN after getting EAD

Hi,

I was one of those wives who didn't realize we had to apply for a SSN before the I-94 expired so now we've had to wait until he received his EAD. he now has it and we can apply.

my question is what sort of documentation they will need in terms of his immigration status - we still are waiting for the GC, so is the EAD enough or do we need to print something out saying the 485 app is being processed?

any other docs needed when we go to the office with the application, besides his passport and EAD card?

thanks

He needs to provide proof of age, identity and work authorized status. The EAD card is his proof of identity and work authorized status. Birth certificate would prove age, lacking that use the passport.

The thing is SSA will need to verify his status and sometimes when the AOS is pending the EAD card info doesn't get updated in the system and that can delay the status verification/

Yes, that's the problem I'm anticipating - we don't have any paper stating his current status since the GC hasn't arrived yet. the website says that a document stating that we have applied for residency is not valid. i'll probably call them before going.

The EAD card serves to prove legal status but the SSA will need/want independant verification via SAVE system... If it is in the system then all is golden... if not they will need to get it and it might take a few extra days

The problem is that our case status has not been updated on the USCIS website - we have our Advance Parole document and our EAD but that is not reflected on the website. So do we have to wait until either the GC arrives or things are updated in the system?

Calling the SSA office is a pain - you can't get through easily to ask them anything. So I don't wanna go down there and get turned away.

Also does anyone know if I can go down to the office and apply for my husband? They are only open during his working hours, but he'll take time off if he has to in order to go.

Whose website? The egov.uscis.com is NOT the SAVE system SSA uses. The verification is the SSA's problem and not so much yours.... besides it will NOT prevent you from applying. You need to start the ball rolling
