If the roundtrip ticket is cheaper then definitely go for it. The airline will not charge you for being a "no-show" on your return flight. However, you may get a little refund if you do not use you return flight. My advise would be to go ahead and cancel the return once you get to the US and get a little back from your dough.

Good luck!

My wife is freaking about the "penalty for not using the second half of ticket" thing. The two different travel agents in Japan told here United would charge a penalty if she didn't use the second half.

I think they must be trying to scam her into buying a more expensive one way ticket. What are they going to do, send us a bill if she doesn't show up for the flight?

Good lord. People miss flights every day for all kinds of reasons. Never heard of anyone getting billed for it.

And that's why airlines traditionally overbook. Someone who doesn't show up means they can sell the seat a second time.

Hello, I have an even more specific question about travel arrangements for my fiancé

She will be travelling from Sao Luis Brazil to JFK. Prices are a bit outrageous presently and I was thinking to buy a round trip ticket for her to Rio De Janeiro from Sao Luis, and then buy a ticket from Rio to JFK round trip, but I was thinking of getting it from Expedia or Priceline which only allow an American city of departure.

So, I was thinking to buy the round trip ticket, but she would only use the Return trip portion of it. Would the airlines have any way of knowing she was not on the first flight? I know they give you these customs papers to fill out and they collect them when you depart from Rio, so I wonder if that would cause her a problem

Thanks!

FYI... If you do not call them and cancel the flight,,, once you miss the first flight they will cancel the remaining flight segments. And, depending on the fare-type your ticket will most likely become worthless.

Regards,

We got a roundway ticket, since it was cheaper. No questions about that at entry -- and we're not sure they could have known she had a return trip in her pocket.
