Does anyone have experience with filing for passport directly in the passport agency in LA? Is it done in the same day?

Thank you!

I had a friend drive down to the LA passport agency and he ended up spending the entire day there to get a new passport. He had to show it was an emergency to have it done immediately (ie plane tickets for his trip)

I just sent mine in for renewal and paid 145 for renewal and expedited processing they guarantee 2 weeks door to door.

Not sure if I would take this to court as a guarantee:

"How Long Will it Take to Process a Passport Application?

At this time, we are processing routine applications in approximately three weeks from the time of application. We are processing requests for expedited service within two weeks door-to-door*. "

We paid the DOS $151.25 for expedient service plus $25.00 fee to their agent for processing, plus, $16.50 to send it overnight for a total of $192.75, their website said to expect to pay $174.73 for expedient service, but didn't say how they came up with that figure.

They say to mark your envelope for expedient service if you mail that in yourself. Not sure how that works, as their agent said we could not leave with our forms after she signed them and she would have to shed them.

We did this at 8:00 AM 8Sep2008, DOS received it at 10:52 AM 10Sep2008, and did the electronic transfer of our check on 12Sep2008, but I don't have the exact time on that.

If all goes well, we should receive the passport by 20Sep2008, I understand they send the certificate of citizenship separate, yeah they wanted the one and only original, but wondered why they trusted their agent to give my wife the oath, but not with a copy of it. And just like the USCIS, the DOS deals with either hand printed or typed out forms instead of electronic transfer, so somebody has to retype all that information, and hopefully without errors. Seems kind of backwards to me. They also have to encode that chip, understand they have a box for that with a radio frequency transfer, can't take to long but apparently have to scan the photo unless they use that second photo and hand jam it in somehow. Maybe with a hammer.

We considered Chicago, but what a madhouse that place is with no place to park. No wonder why their agents are so nasty, kind of get nasty myself from breathing tons of exhaust fumes creeping along at 2 mph for four hours.
