Pope Benedict XVI urged ailing pilgrims to accept death "at the hour chosen by God".

...

In his homily, the pope said the ill should pray to find "the grace to accept, without fear or bitterness, to leave this world at the hour chosen by God."

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

I dunno about the chosen by god part - but I do agree with the sentiment, in terms of tax payers having to pick up billions in dollars in costs. Simply because medical technology ALLOWS us to keep people alive doesn't mean we should. What people do with their OWN money is up to them - but when it comes to tax-payer money, different story. PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Well, this is very thought provoking and is something I was thinking about just a week ago. A friend of my MIL has cancer and has been too weak thus far to receive any chemo or radiation treatments. (I can't remember which) Anyway, he's slowly wasting away. He's about 78. He's in a lot of pain, and is very very ill. My MIL just sent me an email saying, that despite his being so very sickly, they're going to start treatment anyway.

This got me thinking how barbaric we can be and wondering what say he's having in his own treatment, how much family and his Doctor are impacting on his decisions.

Given the above information, I wrote my MIL back and said, when is enough, enough? Apparently the chemo or radiation will slow things down, and maybe give him some more "time". That's time I'd rather have living and loving my family in my last days, being given the best pain medication possible, getting my affairs in order, entering a hospice and dying with dignity. The quality of life this guy is going to have in his last days is not going to be pretty.

Just my thoughts....

That's understandable. I often think about my aunt who died of ovarian cancer years ago. I think she had been given chemo but the cancer had advanced and had spread into intestines causing total blockage. At that point, all her grown children could do was have her in a bed at home, administering her morphine and applying liquids to her eyes and mouth through a dropper as she slowly died. Although it was harrowing to see her wasting away, she seemed at peace.
