Old Man McCain has another senior moment (or, he's lying again)

Fewer vehicles draw the wrath of many Michigan auto workers than the Toyota Prius. Many Michigan members of Congress bitterly complained that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had the 2007 energy bill -- which hiked fuel economy standards by 40 percent over 10 years -- drive to the White House in a staff member's Toyota Prius.

The Prius came up again last week, in a interview with WXYZ (Channel 7) in Detroit. Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain denied buying his daughter Meghan a Toyota Prius -- a statement at odds with a previous comment he made.

"Actually, she bought it -- I believe -- herself, but yes she does have a Toyota Prius because it ... saves on fuel efficiency," McCain said.

In October 2007, the New York Times reported he made a speech in South Carolina in which McCain said he had bought his daughter a Prius, after briefly forgotting the car's name. "OK, Prius, Prius," McCain said. "I ought to know the name of it; I paid for it."

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Interesting article in the Economist about why McCain is liked, despite his predeclition for gaffes. Is it all true? I doubt it, but it at least has the merit of plausibility:

r McCain’s unusual openness helps to explain why journalists, even ones who don’t warm to Republicans, often make an exception for him. Whereas Mr Obama tosses only sporadic crumbs to the hordes of scribblers who follow him, Mr McCain spends hours at the back of the bus blabbing with them. Other politicians seek to minimise gaffes by never voluntarily saying an unscripted word. Mr McCain takes the opposite approach. By opening up, he lets reporters see how he thinks and what he knows. As a result, hacks tend to cut him some slack, for example when he confused Sunni terrorists with Shia ones. Any journalist who has spent time with him knows he knows the difference.
