And just which other countries are risky? Is Peru one, for example?

Hi Tarumba,

I really don't know the answer to your question but you might have a better luck in getting an answer if you post your question in a separate thread. It is more likely that somebody will read it as this is a rather old thread now. Sorry I couldn't be of any help.

Good luck to you on your journey and I sincerely hope Peru isn't one of the "dodgy" countries. :)

Answer that I previously got from a now-retired consular officer: "Any poor country."

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Oops... but I dont think Peru is in that high risk fraud....I havent heard any bad experiences related to K1 visas....Go to the Review Consulate/embassy which is in the upper part (blue) and look for Peru. There are good reviews about Peru. But of course, you never know...

The poorer the country compared to the USA them more scrutiny of bona fides because there is inherently more motivation to fraudulently immigrate.

The middle east is a different animal in this regard, for entirely separate reasons.

take a deep breath ;)

China is a whole different ballgame than is London. You will hear many horror stories from the higher fraud Consultes.

As long as you meet the criteria of having met in the past two years and all other guidelines along the way you should be fine.

There are couples here who met only weeks before filing. ;)

Yep, Guangzhou is dealing with a high visa fraud country, so can be a nightmare. UK is NOT a high visa fraud country, so is much less stringent when it comes to this.

And just which other countries are risky? Is Peru one, for example?

By the way! What ARE the typical reasons that people get denied a K-1? I'm not too sure VJ is making me feel better or not! LOL It appears that filing for a K-1 for someone in the UK takes longer than most of the other countries -- Why is that?

Make sure you have pictures, it is undeniable proof. Reasons I have heard for denial:

1) If the applicant admits to previous drug use, ANY previous drug use is an automatic denial

2) Lack of evidence (only proof is one picture, one e-mail)

3) The couple met on the internet and have had 1 visit in the past 2 years

4) The couple have different stories on how they met

5) Caught in a lie

6) Lack of financial support without a co-sponsor

so you have to meet more than once? We've been talking every single day since 12-07

We met in person 5-08 he attempted a long visit 10-08 but was turned away we plan to file friday--we've only literally met in person once--but I'll be flying to Scotland in December which will be AFTER we've already filed :( This is all so confusing!

I'm really starting to get terrified about this entire process--it's really hard to be apart and to love someone so much --all we want to do is be together

What's all that stuff about financial support and co-sponsors? Am I the co-sponsor since I'm the American?

You only need to have met once in the 2 years before filing. But its a good idea to visit at least once more before your Interview at the embassy and to keep a good record of that visit to show an honest ongoing relationship.

You only have to meet once in person in the last two years, per the instructions. The second visit will go over well during the consulate interview. And if asked about why you haven't met more, you can also talk about how he was turned back at the border.

You are the "sponsor" as the USC in this situation. A co-sponsor comes into play if you the sponsor do not meet the financial eligibility requirements.

Can I give you two a brief word of advice?? It is really super easy to get stressed out and overwhelmed with this process. You can do it. Just take the time to read everything here on VJ, on the USCIS website, on the forms themselves, get yourselves informed and aware of the process as a whole, and you will be fine. The more you stress and dwell on stuff that is really out of your control, the harder this is going to be on you. You will get through it, it's gonna take some time, but you will get through it :)

London might be a bit different when it comes to financial documentation process but typically it is 125% of the poverty limit for a household of your size

YMMV
