Outrage at McCain's "lies" is a total loser strategy.

Even he wanted the inspectors back in Iraq to reasssure the U.S. that there were no WMDs and that Iraq hadn't started new production during the 5 year period on non-inspection but Iraq didn't agree until the invasion was imminent.

Newsflash: The inspectors were in Iraq conducting unfettered inspections until some Yahoo called the UN from 1600 Penn Ave telling them to pull the inspectors out. Don't sit there pretending that Bush wanted the inspections complete. There's nothing on the books that supports any such thing. Bush wanted to go in. The inspections were progressing nicely and, hence, had to be stopped as the completion of them would have destroyed Bush's made up case to go in.

Sure, after Saddam had 5 years to hide and move them.

Gary, we all know that you don't mind being lied to by your government as long as it is a Republican government that does it. Well understood. Some folks in the country like to hold their highest office to higher standards than that. Not you apparently, but some of us still do.

And some would rather blame everything on Bush no matter what. It's called BDS and you have a very bad case of it.

I am not blaming everything on Bush. I've got a headache today and that's not Bush's fault. Neither was the BJ Clinton got while in office.

The reckless war that this nation was lied into, however, is Bush's fault.

Bush saw an opportunity to invade Iraq, which was the attacks on 9/11. He knew the American Public wanted payback (understandable) and he knew that patriotism was sky high, so the timing was perfect. The fact that Iraq actually had nothing to do with the attacks was a mere technicality. Now if the Bush administration had executed the war with some level of competence the fact that there wasn't an actual reason to invade wouldn't have been important (someone like Michael Moore would have protested, but 95% of the public would have ignored him).

However Bush listened to Dumsfeld & 2003-2007 was a distaster. Last year he finally started listening to people who knew what the hell they were doing (e.g. Gates & Petreus) & since then the situation has improved (although the Iraqis have made very little progress despite the improved security). Die hard Republicans absolutely refuse to admit the truth in the matter & will back Bush no matter what. That's the 30% of the American public that still feel Bush has done a bang up job over the past 7 1/2 years (i.e. his approval rating, give or take a % point or two). Don't waste your breath on this 30%, they get really confused with the facts! The sad thing is that this 30% tends to represent about 75% of the people who post on forums.

That's as I remember it also - Hans Blix and the UN team were on record saying that they needed more time to finish their work, and that after the second resolution was passed they were actually receiving cooperation from the Iraqi Govt.

The administration had made up its mind on Iraq soon after 9/11 and would have prosecuted it entirely unilaterally, but for Tony Blair's insistence that they go through the motions at the UN (not doing that would have had far more drastic consequences for the US, and the administration would have likely had no support for it whatsoever).

All of those quotes are taken out of context or else they were on that liberal network, MSNBC!

Getting back to the original poster I totally disagree... Obama should illustrate the lies & propaganda the McCain campaign has been using. McCain himself tried to run a decent campaign vs Bush in 2000 and paid dearly for it. Apparently he now supports the "if you can't beat them, join them" philosophy. Kerry was a victim of dirty politics in 2004 as well.

Dirty politics works & like I've said before it's because most Americans are too gullible or too uninformed to discern between lies & truths. Most lies have bits & pieces of the truth thrown in, which makes telling them apart even more difficult. It would be nice if this election was won or lost based on each candidate's actual positions on important issues, but that's not going to happen.

Evidently I'm the only one who remembered being told about no Saddam threat and his stockpile destruction pre 9/11 by the entire administration.

Wonder what's to blame for everyone else's short term memory problem.

The inspectors were kicked out from 1998 to 2002 so there were no inspections at all. Saddam hindered inspections using the spying claims so they did hinder inspectors.

Bush got the inspectors in here unlike Clinton when he backed down in 1998 so your memory of events is flawed and your theory is bunk.

1997

"The UN disarmament commission concludes that Iraq has continued to conceal information on biological and chemical weapons and missiles (Oct 23).

Iraq expels American members of the UN inspection team (Nov. 13).

1998

"Iraq suspends all cooperation with the UN inspectors (Jan. 13).

UN secretary-general Kofi Annan brokers a peaceful solution to the standoff. Over the next months Baghdad continued to impede the UN inspection team, demanding that sanctions be lifted (Feb. 23).

Saddam Hussein puts a complete halt to the inspections (Oct. 31).

Iraq agrees to unconditional cooperation with the UN inspectors (Nov. 14), but by a month later, chief UN weapons inspector Richard Butler reports that Iraq has not lived up to its promise (Dec. 15).

The United States and Britain began four days of intensive air strikes, dubbed Operation Desert Fox. The attacks focused on command centers, missile factories, and airfields—targets that the Pentagon believed would damage Iraq's weapons stores (Dec. 16–19)."
