Not in SSA system after 2 weeks??

Hello!

I am kind of worried. I have been in the US under K1 for 2 weeks now, and I got married. I went to SSA, but they told me I wasn't in the system yet, that more information was required to let me have a SSN. What should I do? Should I go back there and ask them to try to look for my case manually? Has anybody done that before?? Or should I just be a little more patient and wait??

Thanks, really appreciated.

The same thing happened to me, I waited 3 weeks, and they couldn't find me in the system. To have them do it manually doesnt take too long, (I had to wait 3 weeks instead of the normal 2, for it to arrive in the mail). All they do is talk to uscis and request your info, then uscis says everything is okay and they send you your card.

May take you longer for them to have it in the system then to just go ahead and do it. I may be wrong about that, but hopefully someone can answer more concisely. From my experience its perfectly fine to have them do it manually, if you're not in any rush to have it then you probably wont even notice the wait.

good luck and don't worry!

Hello, thanks for sharing your experience. So you say the manual request is just talking to USCIS to check if everything is ok? I thought that SSA had to send by mail a request called G-845 with a bunch of docs attached to it, and then wait for the answer...

I don't know if I should, like you, wait another week and then ask the manual research, or if I should do it now

I really would like to get it soon, because I'd like to get my DL asap... And with no SSN, I cannot do that.

Oh well, patience is a virtue.

Thanks!! and good luck to you too for the rest of the events :)

As I understand for people with non immigrant visa status, the part of the I-94 they keep gets sent to a contractor in Kentucky to be entered into the system. Your I-94 could have got lost in transit or be sitting on someone's desk. Some POE might turn the I-94s in once a month.

SSA taps into this information to verify your status. They try an intital verification while you are in the office. If that doesn't verify they are supposed to send a secondary electronic verification request. If that verifies they process the application. However, sometimes the response is to send a copy of the I-94 along with Form G-845 and that can take a while, since it gets mailed to the immigration office and then mailed back.

At this point I would make sure the secondaryrequest has been input and then check back in a week to see if they have received a response.

The other thing is, see if you were in the system in your maiden name or not at all. If you verify with your maiden name and can provide proof of the name change (marriage certificate) that is not a problem and the application can be processed.

About 4 months ago, I was personally told by a SSA employee at my local branch that manual verification is done electronically and is very fast, only a couple of days.

Take it for what it's worth...

Manual verification, is manual verification, which is the Form G-845 and a copy of the immigration document being mailed and can takes weeks or sometimes months.

Take that to the bank.

Hey, thanks a lot for that. I will ask them if the secondary electronic verification has been input then...

The day I went there, the person took both my maiden name and I gave her my marriage certificate, so that she also used my married name, so I think that should be fine. Hopefully!! I just hope the POE sent the I-94.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your help.. I just don't get why they would need to verify if our I-94 and visa are ok. I mean, if we enter the country with that, they really should know everything has been done correctly, no?
