Their site claims two weeks for expedient service, time will tell, last time, some BS about a FBI background check, you would think with a hot off the press certificate of citizenship that will assume the USCIS is doing their job, and my wife is clean. Getting so sick of these government agencies, we didn't have these 30 years ago, and what we had back then was good.

Ha, wife is talking about getting a government job for the benefits, but told her she would never meet the requirements. First and foremost, she is way to considerate for the feelings of other people, they want the meanest most inconsiderate people in the world for these high benefit positions. And if you feel a little authority makes you a god, more the better. Second, her IQ is way too high and she is way too conscientious to learn her job, know all the rules, and just apply those rules. They are looking for people that love to make up their own rules.

I knew I was wasting my time, but did have to drive by the SS office yesterday, brought in a perfectly scanned copy of my wife's certificate, a photo of the USCIS district manage handing her that certificate where you could clearly read the certificate, proof of her interview, her driver's license, valid SS card, her oath letter, and a receipt from the DOS that they are fooling around with her certificate. First off the gal I was dealing with was no longer there, she retired, hmm, couldn't be much older than 40 years old, maybe they lowered that work requirement. A guy replaced her and informs me that my wife has to be present for the citizenship change. Couldn't help buy ask him where he got that rule from, but a woman in the background said I was correct, the applicant need not be present. And this guy could barely speak English, how did he pass his citizenship test?

Went over all my proof, said I been coming in here for 30 years now, and when I do bring in the originals only get a 1/4 second glance, no argument there, the ton of money wife is paying into FICA taxes she probably will never get back, but still no go. Ha, said I knew I was wasting my time, but not very much of it as I was the only person in there, one advantage of living out in the sticks. Took all of 3 minutes, so just said thanks, and I WILL BE BACK, using that Arnold accent. I did show my veteran of a foreign war photo ID and did ask, exactly what was I fighting for. The last four major wars this country has had, we were fighting for the freedom of other countries that didn't even want it, our boys should be here fighting for our own freedom. And this is my country, so don't give me any BS that it isn't, feel our leaders are the true traitors.

Did see that one armed guard in there, something new since 9/11, God, that has to be the most boring job in the world. Sure our forefathers are turning over in their graves the way this country has become. Just getting sick of it.

Good rant! I will give it a 10!

More seriously, I am sorry that not dealing with USCIS didn't alleviate you of your headaches with bureaucracy.

On an aside, your wife should work for the government. Some jobs are VERY nice! :)

AOS Approved on 10-17-08 (details in profile)

Removal of Conditions on 07-19-10

In this tedious process, we tend to forget that this is all worth it.

I love my hubby beyond anything in this world.

Wow, I had no idea there were so many.

Key ones of I have to deal with, are the IRS, but that is for everybody, DNR, EPA, DOE, OSHA, DOE, DOT, FCC, FAA, NSF, and NASA. Typically when a new president is elected, the heads of these agences are history and new people, basically people he owes favors to for the campaign help are put in charge. And the majority are unqualified for these positions like the head of the EPA that doesn't know basic chemistry or the FAA/FCC that are highly technical where they can really make a mess out of things. Not to mention any names, but Emilio Gonzalez really had no business running the USCIS and really caused a lot of aggravation for us plus the major delays. A Cuban refugee that didn't even master the English language which is why so many people have questions here reading the N-400 form. Did find an older one on the internet, but all the questions made sense.

Also typical of these agencies is to fine or criticize rather than to help a person or a business probably explaining why many of our businesses have gone offshore. You will quickly learn your congressman or senator has very little knowledge about these agencies, but yet they provide the funds to support them. And can suspect some corporate influence as to why trichlorethylene is used in the manufacture of R-134A by DuPont when it was outlawed in 1976 for just about everyone else. It is a very dangerous chemical. Or why our state is turning their heads for the many chemicals the corporate farmers are using or why they have a no touch policy on each individual farm that can have as many as three illegals working for them.

Agencies were started in the turn of the last century in a purely advisory capacity to aid congress with technical means. But somehow have grown into groups of authority creating rules of their own that conflict with other agencies or even go against the Constitution of the United States of America. A line was never drawn in that respect. It's a mess.

:star: Congratulations, NickD for your wife achieving US Citizenship! Wish you all the best too with the rest of your immigration journey... :star:

Sorry that you had problems in getting your wife's passport. I do hope that you got that sorted out and your wife has her new US passport now. Happy travels to her as a new US Citizen with a new US passport!

By the way, do they really only accept originals and not photocopies of the citizenship certificate when one applies for a US passport? What does one do when they need and don't have their certificate while they are waiting for the original to be returned back from the passport office?

Ant

P.S. Don't let the government agencies get to you too much, as all government agencies are like that in all countries and in all situations.....

Hey, NickD

One good example of government BS is following from your list.

- Minerals and Geology Management

Who knows what?

I'm paying for high tax for last 9 years without representation, and pay for another fee for USCIS N400 application.

Instead of waiving my fee for N400 processing, they dumped my tax money to where ?

I don't want to know the details.

That will bring my blood pressure level high again, and cause my health problem if I know the details. :(

Our city clerk is a designated agent of the Department of State, I did show her scanned copies of my wife's certificate, unacceptable. Only the original will do even though the copy I made was perfectly legible and the photo of my wife on the certificate of her.

I put her certificate in a heavy clear plastic bag with a very stiff by lightweight piece of cardboard behind it, she wanted to remove the certificate and staple it to the DS-11, said no way, do you have any idea what a replacement certificate costs? In preparation of knowing this was going to happen, printed off from the USCIS website the $380.00 fee, submitting two more passport photos, mailing cost, and the worse, takes a year to get that replacement. She had no idea it was that expensive or difficult to get. I did get her to staple the plastic bag to the form. I hope she left it that was.

Without that certificate, cannot change her status with SS, they also want to see the original. Did ask about a notarized copy, NO, they want to see the original.

Oh and while the instructions in the M-476 manual stated to write the name and A# in light pencil on the rear of the passport photo, wife's interviewer said that is all wrong, has to be written in ink on the front. She wrote it, looks terrible, if they wanted it that way, could have very neatly typed it in with my photo program, but the manual does not say to do that. More confusion.

We are hoping we get her certificate back in one piece. If the DOS does not trust their own agents, they are a hell of a lot more paranoid than I am. Mentioned before, they already lost my birth certificate, but that was only six bucks.

Hi NickD,

Thanks for your helpful (as always on VJ) about the original copies of the citizenship certificate. You would think that they would accept a photocopy (or at least give you back the original right away on-the-spot, after they made a photocopy of it themselves, as the do for other documents for other agencies) of it. I guess not. It's too bad that you had to go through the extra effort/trouble to make sure the certificate didn't get lost and/or damaged. But luckily you were prepared for that beforehand. Yeah, it would be a lot more trouble and expenses if that were to (god forbid) happen and you had to get a replacement. Hmmm...maybe they should start giving citizenship certificates with clear plastic covers/bags for such situations? I'll have to keep that in mind when I do apply for such later on down the road (Note to self: bring the certificate in a baggie/cover, and a copy of the paper stating the lengthy process and the cost it takes to replace the certificate). Did you have the same type of trouble when you went to the SS office and/or other agencies where you had to update your wife's citizenship status? Did the passport office ever give you a receipt, or something like that, stating that they have your wife's certificate, and in the meantime they can use that receipt to prove citizenship status while they are still holding on to the certificate (kind of like a temporary driver's license). As for the passport photos, yeah, if the rules changed from what is stated in the manual, they should state that there (but then again, maybe you could have just had a very picky interviewer that day, that wanted the exception to the rule for the photos). I agree, the immigration process is confusing and frustrating. Oh well, think of it as "they are just doing their job" and don't know much better.

Hope too, that you get your wife's certificate back in one piece, along with your her new passport. By the way, how long does it take for them to process a passport and get a certificate back?

Ant (Thinking about baggies and lost certificates...)

P.S. It's too bad that you lost your birth certificate before. Luckily you got a new one back easily and it only costs $6 for a replacement. Lol...in my situation, I don't know what I would do if I lost my birth certificate, as I cannot get one of those back again, even if I wanted to. By the way, for the passport application, do they ask for foreign birth certificates and/or foreign ID or passports? Or is it just the US citizenship certificate and US ID that they ask for?

By the way, do they really only accept originals and not photocopies of the citizenship certificate when one applies for a US passport? What does one do when they need and don't have their certificate while they are waiting for the original to be returned back from the passport office?

With SS, have the option to bring the original in, show it and they will make a copy of it, but I bring that copy in, but you do leave with the original. The other option is to mail it in and pray you get it back. No such option with the DOS, insisted fanatically they had to have the original. Only other thing they wanted was to see my wife's driver's license for a photo ID, just kept my big mouth shut on that as her certificate also doubles as a photo ID.

Yes, we did get a receipt for the DS-11, but doesn't specially mention the certificate, rumor has it that the DOS knows how much they cost and will take care. If at least we get the passport back, that should be proof for citizenship, and I will be prepared for battle to get a new certificate if it leads to that.

Yes, I did bring in that receipt along with my wife's SS card, her driver's license, a perfectly clear but black and white copy of her certificate and a photo of the district manager handing her certificate to my wife. While you cannot read the print on the certificate, her passport photo on it came through perfectly clear in their photo, no doubt that the certificate is real and that photo identifies my wife. But it was no go with them, they want that quarter second glance of the original. Ever try using logic with a wall? Just said, I will be back.

Could be the USCIS thinks they are the only governmental agency, but would be nice is they provided certified copies for other agencies and it seems one agency does not trust another. One small example of that is the CIA trusting the FBI for possible terrorists attacks.

Hi NickD,

Thanks for your reply again. Lol..you would think that the DOS has the same logic as the SSA, in terms of giving them the original, them photocopying it, and then you getting the certificate back right away. I guess not then. Gee, why are the DOS so picky about having originals? Can't they see that if one doesn't have their original certificate with them, that they would be "out of status" temporarily, which would cause inconvenience for the person applying. The least they could do is provide a receipt, stating that "this serves as a temporary certificate while we have your original certificate for passport processing". I don't understand either, with the additional proof that you provided with the photocopies and the photos, they still didn't accept that either. Not even a notarized and/or certified copy of the certificate they still won't accept. Oh well, that's government for you, insisting that they "want things done their rules by the books, no matter how inconvenient that may be". The "brick walls" and "bureaucratic red tape" indeed! I agree, that the USCIS should provide additional certified copies for such cases, in case there is a need for it for other government agencies who don't accept anything but the originals. Besides, one pays quite a bit of money for that certificate of citizenship, so at least the USCIS can go out of their way too with an additional letter/card for such purposes. For example, like they do when one becomes a citizen in Canada, both a citizenship certificate and a citizenship card is given, and only the card is needed to apply for passports and stuff like that. Oh well. In the meantime, again, I hope you do get your wife's passport in time, along with the citizenship certificate back. And yeah, if you don't get either of them back in time, I'm sure you'd be more than adequately prepared for a long DOS battle ahead....

Nick, they might have cashed the check but already processed your wife's paperwork.

Couple of months ago, I needed an apostille from the Secretary of State. They cashed the check a week after I already got my paperwork back. It is possible that your wife's paperwork is already on its way to you.

AOS Approved on 10-17-08 (details in profile)

Removal of Conditions on 07-19-10

In this tedious process, we tend to forget that this is all worth it.

I love my hubby beyond anything in this world.

LOL, still no listing on the DOS application status, but her passport just arrived here a few minutes ago, took eleven days. Wife teases me about suing her for opening her mail, but had to open it to make sure it was correct, it was and had to call her that all is okay. Ha, do have standing permission to open her bills and pay them.

Now to receive the certificate of citizenship back, but can take her passport to SS and get that done with a copy of course, I don't let them touch our original documents, no telling what kind of germs they are carrying, LOL.

Just one more step to being done.
